Balduin Saria

Balduin Saria (born June 5, 1893 in Pettau , Lower Styria , † June 3, 1974 in Graz ) was an Austrian ancient historian .

Life

Balduin Saria was born in the Lower Styrian town of Pettau (today Ptuj in Slovenia ). There he spent his childhood, attended elementary school and from 1903 the grammar school . As a member of the Pettau Museum Association, he already dealt intensively with the Roman era of his hometown during his high school days and took part in archaeological excavations and the conservation of finds from the old "Poetovio".

In July 1912 Saria put the final examination , and moved to Vienna to attend the University of Archeology and Ancient History to study. There he was fortunate to be able to hear such important teachers as Eugen Bormann , Wilhelm Kubitschek , Emil Reisch and Emanuel Loewy . In 1921 he received his doctorate with the dissertation : On the development of the Mithric cult image .

Subsequently, Saria began his professional career at the newly created Yugoslav National Museum (now again the Serbian National Museum ) in Belgrade , where he was soon entrusted with the management of the archaeological and numismatic department and, from 1923 in southern Serbia, the important excavations of the ancient city of Stobi (today North Macedonia ) and then, from 1925 as a lecturer at the University of Belgrade , where he taught archeology and epigraphy .

In 1926 Saria moved to the University of Ljubljana ( Laibach ). There he worked initially as an associate professor , then from 1937 as a professor of antiquity and ancient history. In Ljubljana, in addition to his teaching activities, he was able to devote himself to numerous excavation projects in the area of ​​the then Draubanate (now Slovenia) and publish research results. In particular, in 1927 he initiated the excavations of the late antique ring wall settlement on Gradišče near Velike Malence ( castle stables near Groß Malenitz).

After the occupation of the city of Ljubljana by Italian troops in April 1941 and the subsequent annexation of the " Provincia di Lubiana " by the Kingdom of Italy , could Saria with his family because of the German-Italian resettlement agreement of 31 August 1941, when ethnic German optants , the Emigrate to the German Empire . In 1942 he was appointed to the University of Graz , whereupon he held the professorship for Roman antiquity and epigraphy until the end of the war. After leaving the chair, Saria retired in 1946 .

Act

Saria's research focus was the history of Southeast Europe since ancient times. He examined in particular Roman traces in Styria and the effects of Roman culture, administration and language on the Balkan peoples. He published his research results in several monographs and numerous articles, most of them in the journal Südostforschungen , of which he was co-editor since 1954. In 1957 he was a founding member of the Southeast German Historical Commission. He belonged to the German Archaeological Institute and the Austrian Archaeological Institute .
