Annette Wehrmann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Annette Wehrmann (born June 10, 1961 in Hamburg ; † May 2010 ) was a German-speaking artist and author .

Life

Annette Wehrmann studied fine arts from 1985 to 1993 at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg and at the Städelschule in Frankfurt. She graduated from Stanley Brouwn . The "explosions" (1993), which took place as actions in public space in Hamburg, are among her best-known works. Your photo series for this project is not only a documentation, but also forms a separate body of work. Annette Wehrmann took part in the politicization of art in the 1990s, was interested in forms of self-organization and also practiced them. In the end, she worked as an individual, but was always in contact with many groups. Annette Wehrmann died while preparing for the exhibition "Hacking the City" at the Folkwang Museum in Essen . She was found in her home by friends on May 20, 2010, the exact date of her death is unknown.

Wehrmann developed a strong, singular artistic position between sculpture and intervention , which, in terms of art history , ties in with the methods of conceptual art and action art as well as the language of the Situationist International . Using ephemeral and cheap materials, she created objects that create a tense relationship with major socio-political, epistemological and artistic issues. It worked on money, religion, brains, thinking, the city, the state, television, the language. From the beginning, her work was against the world.

For the 2001 Federal Garden Show in Potsdam, Annette Wehrmann transformed a Soviet military watchtower into a mirror pavilion (“The Tower”). “The concept of the BUGA envisaged that the history of this place should not be completely denied. I gutted one of these old watchtowers from the inside, i.e. removed the viewing platform and the stairs leading upwards, and turned it into a kind of mirror cabinet. The function was actually the other way around: in the classic way according to Foucault, I reversed the surveillance gaze. An illusory infinite space was created, where the boundaries are no longer recognizable, where four or five mirror walls reflect one another. This resulted in an endless space that was actually only two meters by two meters ”.

In addition to her texts on art, Annette Wehrmann also wrote literary works. With her readings of texts written on streamers, in which everyday observations are linked with philosophical and aesthetic questions, Annette Wehrmann demonstrated visual poetry in the third dimension under the aspects of art in a social context. With the project “ORT DES GEGEN”, the artist went in search of empty spaces in largely defined public space that could be charged with their own versions of personal resistance. “The 'PLACE OF AGAINST' denotes a break for purpose-free negation, especially for a purposeless passing of time, materialized in the increase / accumulation of waste. Somewhere between stalling and radical release. At the 'PLACE OF AGAINST' the residents can meet each other without any purpose or meaning, but the opposite or nothing at all is also possible. At the 'PLACE OF AGAINST' the heaps grow: heaps of time and boredom, abundance and waste ”, explained the artist in a text.

One of Annette Wehrmann's best-known installations is “Aaspa”, which was conceived for the 2007 Skulptur Projekte Münster. They closed the banks of the Aasee , popular with walkers and cyclists , in order to set up a construction site there. In this work, topics such as the privatization of public space, the private search for relaxation and happiness entered into a disturbing correspondence with the stories of utopian architecture and Earth Art.

In 2011 the place of the Gegen eV was founded in Hamburg. It followed the rescue of Annette Wehrmann's artistic estate. With the salvage and preservation of their work, a basis was created for carrying on their art and their thinking. The members of the association are Erzsébet Ambrus, Hans-Christian Dany, Sabine Falk, Katharina Gerszewski, Jochen Möhle, Christoph Rauch, Holger Steen, Inga-Svala Thorsdottir, Laila Unger, Brigitte Wehrmann, Monika Wucher, Ina Wudtke. The artists and authors belong to Annette Wehrmann's circle of friends and have worked with her in one way or another.
