Wolfsburg Art Association

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kunstverein Wolfsburg e. V. is one of the oldest art institutions in Wolfsburg . It was founded in 1959 and is based in Wolfsburg Castle .

history

The establishment was initiated on December 12, 1959 in the town hall of Wolfsburg . The founding members included the former Lord Mayor Uwe-Jens Nissen and the then 29-year-old archivist of the Volkswagen factory and later Lord Mayor Volkmar Köhler . The first managing director of the association was Carsten Sternberg from 1971 to 1972, followed by Klaus Hoffmann from 1972 to 1997. Both were directors of the Wolfsburg Municipal Gallery at the same time . This was followed by Susanne Pfleger (acting), Barbara Steiner and Doris Berger. Justin Hoffmann has been the director of the Kunstverein Wolfsburg since 2004 .

For its work, the association was awarded the prize of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Deutscher Kunstvereine as the best German art association in 2007 . In 2010, the room for friends in the Kunstverein Wolfsburg was set up for an indefinite period of time. The use of the room is largely open to those invited and is intended to enable cultural activities of all kinds.

Exhibition activity

In the group exhibition “Young Düsseldorf Painters and Sculptors” (1966), works by artists such as Gerhard Richter , Sigmar Polke , Konrad Lueg, Günther Uecker and Jörg Immendorff were shown. As a pioneer of conceptual art, Timm Ulrichs was represented in several exhibitions of the Kunstverein Wolfsburg in the 1970s (e.g. 1973 in “Graphischer Realismus der Gegenwart”). In 1982 new “wild” painters from the Cologne group “Mülheimer Freiheit” exhibited their work, including Jiří Georg Dokoupil . Other artists were Candida Höfer - Photography (1998) and Atelier CoS - Chicks on Speed (2004).

One of the most extraordinary projects in 2005 was the establishment of the "Electropop Club" first in Bytom (Poland / Upper Silesia) and then in the Wolfsburg Art Association with numerous concerts, performances, film screenings, etc. In addition to intercultural activities, promoting the local art scene in Wolfsburg is an important concern of the Wolfsburg Art Association. In 2006 the "arti" was initiated as an art prize for local artists. Wolfsburg as a location with its special city history and its special role for the labor and economic situation in Germany is repeatedly addressed in projects of the Wolfsburg Art Association, in particular in "Garden Mapping Wolfsburg" (2004), "Industrial City Futurism 100 Years Wolfsburg / Nowa Huta" (2005 / 2006) and "Wolfsburg Collectors" (2012).

The Kunstverein used the establishment of the new science center phæno , which is located in a building by Zaha Hadid , to initiate a joint Science & Art festival: the Phaenomenale . The first Phenomenale took place on three weekends in early 2007 with performances by Karl Bartos , Console , BBM, Stelarc and others. In 2011, with the help of numerous participating institutions, the Phenomenale had grown into a festival in the Wolfsburg- Braunschweig region .

City Gallery

With the move into the former flower shop in the Alvar-Aalto-Kulturhaus at the end of 2011, a new concept for the Wolfsburg art scene was implemented: the CITY GALLERY connected the CITY GALLERY with its location in Wolfsburg's pedestrian zone and the idea of being able to see the exhibitions from outside through the shop window - an allusion to the nearby shopping center "City-Galerie" - the public and the institutional space. A 24-hour art cinema program also enabled encounters with the visual arts at night. The CITY GALLERY took up the urban situation in its contemporary solo and group exhibitions and supplemented the program with additional events such as concerts, art talks, film screenings, etc. and operated a shop. At the end of 2018 she had to leave the rooms in the Alvar-Aalto-Kulturhaus and has not existed since then.

Education Program - Local Liaison

In addition to guided tours and cooperation with other cultural institutions and schools, the Kunstverein Wolfsburg has developed its own educational program under the title Local Liaison , which looks for connections between the topics negotiated in the Kunstverein and everyday life in Wolfsburg. The focus here was particularly on the links between specialist knowledge, everyday knowledge and personal associations of the participants. For example, at the same time as the “arti”, the Local Liaison announced the “arteen” an art prize for Wolfsburg children and young people. Other formats of the program, which was discontinued in 2012, were table discussions with artists, year-long school cooperations and workshops for young people and adults, in which their own cultural productions such as magazines or installations were created.
