Municipal art collection

From around 1960 the city of Wolfsburg began to buy art. Initially intended as a wall decoration for the office, the collected works developed into an art collection. The main focus of today's holdings of the Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg is on works from the field of German art after 1945. The gallery's collection is located in the Renaissance building of Wolfsburg Castle, with the historical architecture and the contemporary art exhibited in it being in a special dialogue. Since the restoration of the west wing in accordance with the listed building standards in 2002, the collection has been shown permanently on two floors, with reference to the special exhibitions.
