Dieter Asmus (born March 1, 1939 in Hamburg ) is a contemporary German painter and graphic artist of the New Realism .

life and work

Dieter Asmus was born in Hamburg in 1939. During the war he lived temporarily in Gundelsby in the north of Schleswig-Holstein.

After graduating from high school, he studied at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts from 1960 to 1967 . In contrast to the abstract painting that was predominant at this time , he was interested in representational painting. Together with Peter Nagel , Dietmar Ullrich and Nikolaus Störtenbecker , he developed the formal foundations of a New Realism over a period of four years. When the first realistic pictures were available and were to be presented to the public in 1964/65, the artists founded the ZEBRA group .

In the early seventies Asmus met the art historian Armin Schreiber, husband of the writer Brigitte Kronauer . A long-term cooperation resulted. The three art lovers founded a publishing house in which they published Brigitte Kronauer's first novel with drawings by Dieter Asmus. They bought a small villa in Hamburg and lived in it together for decades.

Asmus works in oil. Among other things, the use of stylistic devices from photography such as bleed, cut-out, snapshot , color cast, frog and bird's eye view is characteristic . In the 1990s he also increasingly produced pastels , and from 2000 onwards, increasingly small-format pictures (oil on cardboard).

About 50 works are in public collections ( State Gallery Stuttgart , Albertina Vienna , National Gallery Berlin , National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome , Hamburger Kunsthalle, etc.).

Dieter Asmus is a member of the German Association of Artists and has been a member of the Free Academy of the Arts Hamburg since 1985 . He lives and works in Hamburg.
