Bernhard Martin (* 1966 in Hanover ) is a German contemporary painter and installation artist .

life and work

Martin studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kassel from 1983 to 1989 and completed his diploma with Harry Kramer . The most important influences for him were the documenta as well as the outstanding collection of old masters in Wilhelmshöhe Palace .

Martin was visiting professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg as well as at Villa Arson, Nice, and at the Haute École d'art et de design Genève .

After stays in Barcelona, Salzburg, Frankfurt, Geneva, Nice and London, Bernhard Martin has lived in Berlin since 2013.

Martin's painterly oeuvre combines all available painting styles and techniques, from old-master style to digital print. He makes use of the most diverse worlds of thought, mass media images and phenomena of our time. “The different levels in his pictures look like sampled. With a mix of styles, themes, high and low, style and boldness like the old masters, Martin shaped the image of young painting like few other artists of his generation [...] “An essential element and theme of his work are inner worlds beyond agreed norms when things get out of whack and find their way into a bizarre, hierarchy-free autonomy.

Works by the artist can be found in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, or the Deutsche Bank Collection .
