history

Beginnings

Thaddaeus Ropac, born in 1960 in Klagenfurt, began his career as a gallery owner in 1981 with his first small gallery in Lienz , which he ran there until the beginning of 1985 under the name Thaddäus J. Ropac - Galerie Rotha , then as Thaddäus J. Ropac - Forum for Avant-garde Art . In 1983, the Salzburg location at Kaigasse 40 was added, initially parallel to Lienz, which was operated from the start as Galerie Thaddäus Ropac, Salzburg until it moved to the historic Villa Kast, a historic building at Mirabellplatz 2 in Salzburg's old town in 1989 where it is still today (as of 2020). In March 2010, the gallery was expanded to include the Thaddaeus Ropac - Halle gallery, an exhibition space of more than 2,500 m² in an industrial building not far from Salzburg city center, which will be opened for exhibitions during the festival.
