Henri Loyrette

Henri Jean Eugène Loyrette (born May 31, 1952 in Neuilly-sur-Seine ) is a French art historian , curator and museum director.

Life

Henri Loyrette was born in 1852 to the business lawyer Jean Loyrette in the Paris suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine. After finishing school he first attended a class preparatory and then studied history . He then attended the Académie de France à Rome from 1975 to 1977 . After returning to France in 1978, he became the first curator of the newly founded Musée d'Orsaywhich only opened to the public in 1986. He worked for the museum for 23 years; from 1994 to 2001 he was director of the house. Loyrette published numerous essays and books on his specialty, 19th century art. In addition, he curated several highly regarded exhibitions on this topic, often in collaboration with international museums. This included exhibitions on the architect Gustave Eiffel , the Halévy theater family, the origins of Impressionism and several shows on Edgar Degas .

From 2001 to 2013 Loyrette was director of the Musée du Louvre, succeeding Pierre Rosenberg . During his term of office, he established the Louvre wing for Islamic art and in 2012 the opening of the Louvre-Lens branch museum . Loyrette also endorsed the construction of the Louvre Abu Dhabi , which finally opened in 2017. This cooperation has led to controversial discussions in France and internationally. In 2014, after working for the state museums, he joined Admical , a network of charitable companies.

Loyrette has been a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts since 1997 , the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2006 and a member of the Council of State ( Conseil d'État ) since 2013 . He has received numerous national and international awards for his work.
