From 1982 to 1984 he was President of the Société de l'histoire de l'art français and in 1984 President of the Comité français d'histoire de l'art . During his time as director of the Louvre, François Mitterrand initiated the “Grand Louvre” project, with which the entire building complex was turned into a museum. In this context, among other things, the Galerie d'Apollon was restored and the glass pyramid in the courtyard of the Louvre was built by the architect Ieoh Ming Pei . Since 1989 it has served as the main entrance to the Musée du Louvre.

Rosenberg's research focuses on drawing and painting in France and Italy in the 17th and 18th centuries. He has published historical-critical catalogs on the complete works of Nicolas Poussin , Antoine Watteau and Jacques-Louis David .

In 1995 he was elected to the Académie française to succeed Henri Gouhier .
