The institution, known as Ateneo Veneto , since 1812 as Ateneo Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti , has set itself the goal of promoting the dissemination of science, education, art and culture in every way it utters. Everything that has to do with the conditions, needs and interests of Venice and the Venetian region is in the field of vision of the establishment, which is located on Campo San Fantin 1897.

The Ateneo Veneto was founded in 1458 by two schools , namely that of S. Girolamo or S. Fantin , and that of S. Maria della Consolazione or della Giustizia with seat in the church of San Fantin . In 1471 the two brotherhoods were given their own seat at the current location, which however fell victim to a fire in 1562. The members of the two schools committed themselves to the material, spiritual and spiritual support of their members, but also accompanied those sentenced to death. Therefore it was often nicknamed della buona morte (from the good death).

After the dissolution under Napoleon , the Ateneo was attached to the Società Veneta di Medicina in 1808 . The medical society in turn merged with two other scientific societies , the Accademia dei Filareti and the Accademia Veneta Letteraria , so that on January 12, 1812, the Ateneo Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti emerged . Its first president was the historian Leopoldo Cicognara († 1834). The most famous members, the soci , included politicians, poets and scientists such as Daniele Manin , Nicolò Tommaseo , Pietro Paleocapa , Alessandro Manzoni , Antonio Fogazzaro , Diego Valeri and Carlo Rubbia . Since December 1997 the Ateneo has been recognized as an Organizzazione Non Lucrativa di Utilità Sociale .

The house has a conference room and guest accommodation, on the first floor there is a lecture hall, in 1664 the sala Tommaseo with important art treasures was built, later the meeting room. The library with around 50,000 volumes is located on the upper floor .
