San Fantin

San Fantin , rarely called San Fantino , is a church in the San Marco sestiere on the Campo of the same name in Venice , which was essentially built between 1507 and 1564 by Antonio Abbondi (Scarpagnino) and Jacopo Sansovino . It is located opposite the Teatro La Fenice in the neighborhood of the Ateneo Veneto , the former Scuola Grande di San Fantin . It was also the guild church of the Scaleteri , the seller of confectionery, whose patron saint is San Fantin.

history

The parish church was perhaps built around 850, probably under the patronage of the Barozzi, Aldicina and Equilia families in 996. However, the oldest document dates from 1127. The building was practically rebuilt by the Pisani at the end of the 12th century after a fire. The Pisani also had the icon of the Virgin procured from the east. In the 15th century the church was called Santa Maria delle Grazie di San Fantino . It can be clearly seen on the map of the city, which Jacopo de 'Barbari created between 1498 and 1500.

The renovation, initiated by the Bishop of Vicenza , Cardinal Giovanni Battista Zeno († 1501), cost 10,000 ducats . This also meant that various relics were transferred to the church, such as those of St. Marcellina and St. Tryphon , the patron of Cattaro , as Flaminio Corner reported in the middle of the 18th century. In 1506 the church was demolished and in 1507 construction began according to a design by Scarpagnino , who worked on the building until his death in 1549. Jacopo Sansovino followed him as a builder and sculptor, supported by the sculptor Alessandro Vittoria , with whom he got into a competitive relationship. The two are considered to be the most important sculptors of their time.

Various works have been attributed to Pietro Lombardo and Sebastiano Mariani . The urn of Vinciguerra Dandolo, a work by Tullio Lombardo, is located above the entrance to the sacristy .

In 1807 Napoleon , like many others, had the community dissolved. The parish church was now San Moisè . Between 1810 and 1867, Santa Maria del Giglio took over this role during the Austrian period , then San Moisè again after Veneto had come to Italy in 1866.

In 1931, small houses were demolished because, according to contemporaries, they blocked the view of the Sansovino apse . At the beginning of the 21st century, the church was extensively restored.
