The Scuola Grande di San Fantin (also Scuola di San Girolamo ) was one of the great brotherhoods in the Republic of Venice . Its building (today the seat of the Ateneo Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti ) is located in the sestiere of San Marco on Campo San Fantin near the Teatro La Fenice and the Church of San Fantin. The brotherhood was responsible for looking after those condemned to death and for bringing them to execution. After that it was also called Scuola della Buona Morte or Scuola degli impiccati.

history

The brotherhood emerged in the 15th century from the brotherhoods of Santa Maria della Consolazione and San Girolamo. It was dissolved in 1806. In 1812 the Ateneo was built by Napoleon's decree , the first president of which was Leopoldo Cicognara , followed by Daniele Manin , Niccolò Tommaseo , Alessandro Manzoni , Antonio Fogazzaro and Carlo Rubbia .

building

The brotherhood building was rebuilt after a fire from 1592 to 1600. The design comes from the brothers Antonio and Tommaso Contin, who came from Lugano , and Alessandro Vittoria from Trento worked for them .

The facade has two column arrangements ( Ionic on the ground floor, Corinthian on the upper floor ) as well as a bas-relief of the crucified Jesus, it "looks a bit monotonous and wooden due to the even arrangement and lack of depth" (Dellwing). It is crowned with a Madonna with a halo by Alessandro Vittoria , which is flanked by two angels. The assembly room is on the ground floor and the hostel is on the first floor. The ceiling paintings are remarkable from the original furnishings. The Scuola has u. a. works by Baldassarre d'Anna (Ecce Homo), Leonardo Corona and Palma il Giovane in the Great Aula and by Francesco Fontebasso , Antonio Zanchi and Bernardo Strozzi in the Sala Tommaseo .

In the library's reading room, which has 36,000 volumes, there are paintings by Jacopo Tintoretto and Paolo Veronese and their schools.
