Santa Maria Zobenigo is a Catholic church in the San Marco sestiere on Campo Santa Maria Zobenigo in Venice . It is also known under the name Chiesa di Santa Maria del Giglio . The facade in its current form was built by Giuseppe Sardi in 1680–83 .

history

The history of the church goes back to the 10th century. A Slavic Jubanico family , whose Venetian dialect is Zobenigo , owned a splendid palace in the area and contributed to the construction of the church through generous donations, from which the church got its name. The other name Santa Maria del Giglio, on the other hand, refers to the lilies that the Archangel Gabriel usually carries in his hands in the scene of the Annunciation to Mary .

The originally Byzantine three-aisled basilica was changed over the centuries before it was completely rebuilt in 1680. This happened when the General Inspector for Dalmatia , Antonio Barbaro , left 30,000 ducats in his will in 1678 for the construction of a church that was to serve in memory of himself and his family. He submitted detailed wishes for the organization of this church, which were approved by the Senate and the Chapter. During the war with Cyprus , several artistic products were created in Veneto , which were intended to distract from the increasing decline of Venice's maritime rule in the east. Even Barbaro himself wanted to distract from reality with his magnificent church and set a magnificent monument for himself and his family. He had naval battles in which he had participated on the facade, while he was actually dismissed by Francesco Morosini for incompetence during the Crete War . The construction of today's church building took place from 1680 to 1683 after Barbaro's death in 1679. In 1775, the 13th century campanile collapsed , with business premises on the ground floor.

From Campo Santa Maria Zobenigo, during the Salute festival on November 21, a bridge will be stretched over the Grand Canal to enable the processions to reach the Salute Church . Santa Maria Zobenigo is now part of the parish of San Moisè .

Building description

The facade is the most prominent feature of the church. It serves to glorify Antonio Barbaros and his family, which is depicted on the facade instead of the usual figures of saints. In the new building, however, the original east-west axis of the church was not changed, so that the facade faces a narrow alley, while the unadorned side front faces the square.

At the bottom there are Ionic half-columns , on the bases of which there are reliefs of the ground plans of the cities of Zadar , Candia , Padua , Rome , Corfu and Split . In the niches between the columns you can see the statues of the Barbaros brothers in the habit of their public offices - Giovan Maria Barbaro, Carlo Barbaro, Francesco Barbaro and Marino Barbaro. Above it is a row of Corinthian half-columns , on the bases of which there are reliefs depicting naval battles. In the middle above the church gate the figure of the donor sits on his sarcophagus in front of a flowing curtain, in the niches next to it there are allegorical figures of honor, virtue, fame and wisdom. The facade is finally crowned by an attic and a segmented gable .

The facade of the Church of Santa Maria Zobenigo is an excellent example of the Venetian Baroque . The figures come from the Flemish sculptor Juste Le Court and Enrico Merengo.
