Andrea Schiavone ( Croatian Andrija Medulić , Italian Andrea Schiavone , actually Andrea Meldolla (Medola) ; * around 1510 in Zara, today Zadar in Croatia or 1522; † 1563 in Venice ) was a Venetian painter .

Life

Meldolla's father was the Venetian bailiff in Meldola , which was lost to Venice in 1509 after the Battle of Agnadello . He therefore went to Zara, where Andrea was born and therefore later received the name of origin " Schiavone " (the "Slav").

Schiavone came to Venice early from his hometown of Zadar and worked there for Tizian , whose coloring he combined with the style of Francesco Mazzola, known as Parmigianino . In order to earn a living, like his colleagues, he painted walls, flags and everyday objects such as pieces of furniture or chests.

Schiavone painted biblical paintings and portraits , but his importance lies in the fact that he was one of the first Italians to cultivate the landscape as a separate genre of painting (a mountain landscape and a forest landscape were in the Berlin museum). He has also etched a number of sheets , including landscapes.

Important works by the artist are exhibited today (as of 2007) in the public exhibition in the Uffizi in Florence.

He may have died of meningitis. The sculptor Alessandro Vittoria was also mentioned in his will .
