The Riva degli Schiavoni in Venice

As Schiavoni ( Italian "schiavone" , German "Slav" ) people of Slavic descent were referred to during the Republic of Venice , who came from the regions of Istria and Dalmatia , which were then part of Venice . Many of these people were skilled craftsmen who were called in for town planning, shipbuilding, as soldiers, etc. As a result, Venice was also subject to eastern influences. Examples include St. Mark's Basilica or the oriental Tudor windows on the palaces. Many families of Dalmatian origin had the surname Schiavone in their family name. The Riva degli Schiavoni in Venice bears this name because the Slavs once docked there with their goods. A famous Croat who u. a. lived in Venice, was the polymath Fausto Veranzio (Croatian Faust Vrančić ).

The Venetian ethnonym is also included in the building name of the Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni in Venice , the former seat of the brotherhood of the Dalmatians in the Republic of Venice in the 16th century. In addition, the Roman Catholic titular church " San Girolamo dei Croati " (Saint Jerome of the Croats) has existed in Rome since 1566, which is known under the old name of San Girolamo degli Schiavoni in addition to San Girolamo degli Illirici. The Archbishop of Zagreb always bears the title of cardinal priest today (see list of cardinal priests of San Girolamo dei Croati ). Likewise, the designation appears in the name of the Italian municipalities " San Giacomo degli Schiavoni " in the province of Campobasso in Molise and Ginestra degli Schiavoni in the region of Campania in the province of Benevento .
