The Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni was the brotherhood of the Dalmatians in the Republic of Venice .

history

The brotherhood of the Dalmatians, founded in the 14th century, was recognized by the Council of Ten in 1451 . The meetings of the brotherhood initially took place near the Chiesa di San Giovanni di Malta. Around 1500 the brotherhood acquired the St. Catherine Hospital in the Sestiere Castello on the Rio San Antonino near the Fondamenta degli Schiavoni and expanded it until the middle of the 16th century according to plans by Giovanni de Zan.

The two-story facade of the building is based on the architecture of Jacopo Sansovino . Above the portal there is a relief (Saint George slaying the dragon) by Pietro da Salò from 1552.

The Scuola is famous for its furnishings with paintings by Vittore Carpaccio executed between 1501 and 1511 . Below are the pictures of the legend of St. George in the ground floor hall: St. Georg as a dragon slayer; the saint brings the beast in triumphal procession into the city; he baptizes King and Queen of Selene in Libya .
