Lists on the subject

The Schiavona was a sword that was popular in Italy during the 16th and 17th centuries. It comes from the sword of the Venetian Doge Guard , the name arose because the guard was mainly composed of Dalmatian Slavs ( Schiavoni , Croats ).

The Schiavona is a broadsword and had a wider blade than the contemporary rapier . A surviving sword measures 93.2 cm × 3.4 cm × 0.45 cm, the blade has grooves on both sides that extend over 1/4 the length of the sword. With a weight of 1.1 kg it was suitable as a cutting as well as a stabbing weapon .

The Schiavona found widespread use in the armies of the countries that traded with Italy in the 17th century. It was also sometimes the first choice for heavy cavalry.
