The Rip Chords

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rip Chords were an American surf-pop band that formed in 1962 as a vocal duo around the two singers Ernie Bringas and Phil Stewart in California and were produced by Terry Melcher .

biography

Shortly after finishing high school, Ernie Bringas and Phil Stewart began singing together in 1957. In 1962 the two got the chance to sign a record deal with Columbia Records . The 20-year-old producer Terry Melcher, son of Doris Day , supervised the duo and produced the first single Here I Stand in 1963 . The single made it to number 51 on the Billboard charts in the United States .

On the second release, Gone , Bruce Johnston , a friend of Terry Melcher and later a member of the Beach Boys , accompanied the duo. The single did not reach the success of the debut. Ernie Bringas left at this time the band to the "United Theological Seminary" in Dayton ( Ohio study). Rich Rotkin and Arnie Marcus joined the "Rip Chords" to perform live.

Melcher and Carol Conners wrote a title called Hey Little Cobra . Melcher recognized the potential of the song and wanted to publish it under the name "The Rip Chords". Phil Stewart was accompanied by Bruce Johnston and Terry Melcher during the recording. The single became the greatest success of the "Rip Chords" and reached number 4 on the Billboard charts in 1964. The album Hey Little Cobra and Other Hot Rod Hits followed shortly afterwards .

The next single, Three Window Coupe , written by Roger Christian and Jan Berry ( Jan & Dean ), reached the top 30 on the Billboard charts in the summer of 1964. After another single, One Piece Topless Bathing Suit and an appearance with the song Red Hot Roadster in the film A Swingin 'Summer the band broke up in 1965.

Terry Melcher then produced artists like The Byrds , Paul Revere & the Raiders , Grapefruit or, much later, the Beach Boys with Kokomo . Bruce Johnston started with the Beach Boys in 1965.
