Lili Frohlich-Bume , née Karoline Bum, (born May 14, 1886 in Vienna ; † November 1981 in Camberwell , London ) was an Austro-British art historian , art dealer and art critic.

Life

Lili Bum, daughter of the lawyer Ernst Bum (1855–1927), attended a private girls' high school in Vienna and graduated from the First State High School in Graz in 1906 . From 1906 she studied art history, classical archeology and philosophy at the University of Vienna . In 1906 she received her doctorate under Max Dvořák .

She then worked for the International Bibliography of Art History (volumes 6–8, 1907–09), edited by her future husband Otto Fröhlich (1873–1947), and from 1912 she worked in his art dealership. From 1923 to 1934 she worked for the Albertina Graphic Collection , but was not employed there. Together with Alfred Stix, she created two volumes of the catalog of Italian hand drawings.

After Austria's annexation in March 1938, she emigrated to London with her ailing husband in April 1939 as a result of persecution as a Jew. This was only possible through a "supply guarantee" from relatives. In London she worked as an art dealer until 1948 and looked after her husband. In 1948 she became a British citizen. From 1948 she wrote reports and articles on art historical topics for various magazines, from 1954 until 1976 she reported for Weltkunst from London.
