Camberwell is a neighborhood of the district of Southwark in London .

history

Camberwell was already a significant settlement with a church when it was mentioned in the Domesday Book . Camberwell Church was also the parish church for a larger area. Camberwell was valued by Londoners for its rural tranquility and mineral springs until the mid- 19th century . There are still a few of the mineral fountains in Camberwell Park. But this calm ended with the arrival of the railroad in the 1860s.

etymology

In the Domesday Book of 1086 Camberwell is mentioned as a Camberwelle . This name is derived from the Old English Cumberwell or Comberwell and means Welsh spring .

Alternatively, it is also possible that the name is derived from the Saxon language and means paralyzed spring . Then the name would denote a place to which people with serious illnesses like leprosy were sent. There they would have been treated by the church with the help of the sources there.

population

Camberwell is home to many immigrants and their descendants from the Caribbean and Africa . There is also a community of Greek Cypriots and political refugees from the Middle East .

There are also some art students from the University of the Arts and students from King's College in Camberwell.
