Jadon Malik Sancho (born March 25, 2000 in London ) is an English football player . The midfielder , whose parents come from Trinidad and Tobago , is under contract with Borussia Dortmund and is an English international.

Career

In the club

youth

Sancho started playing football at Watford FC when he was seven . In March 2015, at the age of 14, he moved to Manchester City . With the A-youth he participated in the season 2016/17 at the UEFA Youth League in part where the Citizens but in the play-offs at FC Salzburg failed. From January 2017, at the age of 16, Sancho made his first senior appearances in Premier League 2. At Manchester City, Sancho had a scholarship contract , which he terminated in accordance with the English statutes, as he saw no perspective for himself in the professional team. At that time, reports that he had gone on strike were reported to be false.

Borussia Dortmund

On August 31, 2017, the last day of the transfer period , Sancho moved to the Bundesliga for Borussia Dortmund , where he received his first professional contract. BVB paid a transfer fee of around seven million euros because they did not want to wait for an arbitration award from the FA . Sancho was immediately part of the professional squad, but initially played in the second men's team in the fourth-class Regionalliga West and in the A-Youth , for which he was still eligible to play for two seasons, in the Youth League and once in the A-Junior Bundesliga . On September 30, 2017 he was in the Bundesliga matchday squad for the first time in a Bundesliga match in BVB's 2-1 away win against FC Augsburg , but was not substituted on. On October 21, 2017, Sancho made his debut under coach Peter Bosz at the age of 17 in the Bundesliga, when he came on for Maximilian Philipp in the 83rd minute of the 2-2 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt . On April 21, 2018 he played in the Bundesliga game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen and scored his first Bundesliga goal with the goal to make it 1-0 (final score 4-0).

In the 2018/19 season, Sancho became a regular under the new head coach Lucien Favre . He was the only member of the squad to play all 34 Bundesliga games, played in all seven games in the Champions League and only missed one cup game . With 29 scorer points, he had a significant share in the 81 goals of the season for BVB, with which he was runner-up. In addition, the Englishman, whose contract was prematurely extended to June 2022 in October 2018, became the youngest BVB player to score a "double" in the Bundesliga.

In August 2019, Sancho, whose contract was extended for another year to June 2023, won his first title with the club when the double winner of the previous season, FC Bayern Munich , was defeated 2-0 in the DFL Supercup . At the end of November 2019, he was voted 2nd in the Golden Boy election for the best U21 player in Europe in 2019 behind João Félix . As the youngest player to date, the Englishman scored his 25th Bundesliga goal on matchday 20 of the 2019/20 season against Union Berlin at the age of 19 years and 312 days. On the 29th matchday of the same season, the offensive player managed his first hat trick as a professional at 6-1 in Paderborn . With 44 competitive games, the Englishman had completed the second most after Achraf Hakimi , he missed two for disciplinary reasons for misconduct off the field. Due to the increasing relocations of the wingers Hakimi and Guerreiro to the offensive positions, he was also used more often in attacking midfield. In the end there were 20 goals and 20 assists across all competitions, which again meant an increase in performance.

Before the 2020/21 season , there was speculation that Sancho might join Manchester United . BVB gave him a deadline until the start of the training camp in Bad Ragaz . After no change had come about by then, sports director Michael Zorc said that they were planning with Sancho for the season and had extended his contract to June 30, 2023 a year ago.

In the national team

In May 2017, Sancho took part with the English U17 national team at the European Championship in Croatia and reached the final there. Although England lost the final to Spain on penalties , Sancho was named player of the tournament. In October 2017 he took part in the U17 World Cup in India . After Sancho had scored three goals in three missions, he returned to Dortmund after completing the group stage as agreed. Then the team won the title in his absence.

In October 2018, Sancho was appointed to the English senior team for the first time for the upcoming games in the UEFA Nations League . He made his debut against Croatia on October 12, 2018 , when he came on for Raheem Sterling in the 78th minute . In the 5-3 home win over Kosovo in qualifying for Euro 2020 , the offensive player scored his first two goals for the A selection.

Style of play

Despite his professional training in Watford and Manchester, Sancho's style of play is strongly influenced by his roots as a "street footballer" in the streets of Kennington . In addition to his high running strength (as an 18-year-old he achieved a measured speed of over 34 km / h in the Bundesliga), his strengths in ball control and dribbling benefit him. The Englishman is preferred as an attacking winger and, in addition to his main task, putting on goals, also has his own finishing skills.
