Nico Schulz (born April 1, 1993 in Berlin-Tegel ) is a German soccer player . He can be used in defense and defensive midfield and was trained at Hertha BSC . Schulz is currently under contract with Borussia Dortmund and is a multiple German junior and senior national player.

Career

societies

Nico Schulz, son of an Italian father and a German mother, grew up in Berlin-Tegel and began playing football in the youth of the BSC Rehberge in the Wedding district . At the age of seven he switched to the Hertha BSC youth academy . There he performed well, making him the focus of scouts from Liverpool FC . However, Schulz turned down the offer to play for the youth of Liverpool in the future.

In the following years he reached the final of the DFB-Junioren-Vereinspokal 2009/10 against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim , which took place in the domestic amateur stadium, with the A-youth of his club ; it was lost 1: 2.

In the summer break that followed, Schulz drove to the training camp for the first time with the Hertha professionals, who played in the 2nd Bundesliga , and made such a strong impression there that he was coached by Markus Babbel on August 14, 2010 in the 1st round of the DFB- Cup played the first competitive game for Hertha's first team in the 2-0 success in Pfullendorf ; he was substituted on in the 81st minute for Valeri Domowchijski .

Six days later, the defender made his debut in the 2nd Bundesliga in a 3-2 home win over Rot-Weiß Oberhausen when he came on again shortly before the end of the game for Domowtschijski. During the 2010/11 season he came under coach Babbel mostly as a substitute for some missions.

After Schulz at the beginning of the 2015/16 season , Hertha had meanwhile been promoted, had played in the first round of the cup and on the first day of the game for the Berlin team, he moved to league rivals Borussia Mönchengladbach on August 18, 2015 . He received a four-year contract with the Champions League participant . He made his debut for Borussia Mönchengladbach on September 19, 2015, the 5th match day, when he came on for Ibrahima Traoré in the 1-0 defeat against 1. FC Köln . In October 2015 he suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in a test match against MSV Duisburg , which meant that he was eliminated for the rest of the season in which Borussia were eliminated from the Champions League group stage as bottom of the table. In the summer of 2016, the defensive player in the regional league team was able to collect match practice again, but only made 16 short appearances for the first team, including in the knockout round in the Europa League against league rivals Schalke 04 .

In the summer of 2017 , Schulz moved to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim , where he signed a three-year contract. This was extended for another year in December 2018. With the Kraichgauer, the regular player finished third, which meant the best performance of the season to date and the club's first entry into the Champions League. Schulz and TSG did not get beyond the group stage there. In the 2018/19 Bundesliga season, Hoffenheim ended up ninth and missed another leap to Europe.

For the season 2019/20 changed Schulz to Borussia Dortmund . He signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2024. In August 2019, he won his first title with the club when the double winner of the previous season, FC Bayern Munich , was defeated 2-0 in the DFL Supercup . In the 4-0 away win against 1. FSV Mainz 05 on matchday 15, the defender scored for the first time for BVB in the Bundesliga. At the start of the season he was used a few times on the left defensive flank. The club's fifth-most expensive newcomer to date, who had already played ten international matches, was unable to convince there. After Lucien Favres switched to a 3-4-3 system, the defender had to move to left midfield. In both positions he lost out to Raphaël Guerreiro , mostly only sat on the bench from the second half of the season and only returned to the field with short appearances within the last three games of the season.

National team

Schulz played a total of 51 games for the German junior teams of the U15 , U16 , U17 and U18 national teams. In qualifying for the U19 European Championship in 2012 , Schulz scored his first goals for a German national team. The DFB team did not qualify for the European Championship finals.

From August 2013 he was part of the German U21 national team. In qualifying for the 2015 European Championship , he made six appearances and qualified with the team for the finals in the Czech Republic . Schulz was used in all four games and was eliminated with a 5-0 defeat against Portugal in the semi-finals.

On August 29, 2018 he was appointed by national coach Joachim Löw for the group game in the “Liga A” of the UEFA Nations League against France and for the friendly against Peru . In his international A debut on September 9, 2018 in Sinsheim in the game against Peru, he scored the 2-1 winning goal in the 84th minute.
