Thomas Joseph Delaney (born September 3, 1991 in Frederiksberg ) is a Danish football player . He is under contract with Borussia Dortmund in Germany and is a Danish national player.

Personal

Delaney is the son of an Irish American father and a Danish mother. He is a Danish citizen. He speaks Danish , English and German . Before moving to Bremen, he refreshed the German he had learned at school with private lessons.

FC Copenhagen

Delaney grew up in Frederiksberg and began playing football in the offspring of Kjøbenhavn's Boldklub . He made his debut for FC Copenhagen , the first team of Kjøbenhavns Boldklub , which merged with Boldklubben 1903 , on April 16, 2009, when he played in the 65th place in the semi-final of the Danish cup competition against Nordvest FC , which Copenhagen won 4-0. Minute for Hjalte Bo Nørregaard was substituted on.

For the 2009/10 season Delaney was included in the professional squad and came in his first season to nine appearances in the league. He also played in qualifying for the Champions League and the group stage of the 2009/10 Europa League . At the end of the season he became Danish champions with the Copenhagen team and successfully defended this title in the 2010/11 season .

Overall, he was four times Danish champions with FC Copenhagen, three times cup winners and played regularly in the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Champions League . He left the club during the winter break of the 2016/17 season .

Werder Bremen

On January 1, 2017, Delaney moved to the German Bundesliga for Werder Bremen . He scored his first goal in the Bundesliga on his fifth appearance for Werder Bremen in a 2-0 win in the away game against 1. FSV Mainz 05 with a directly converted free kick. In the away game against SC Freiburg on April 1, 2017, he scored three times in a 5-2 victory and thus for the first time in his career several times in one game. When asked by a journalist whether he took the ball with him after scoring three goals, Delaney replied, “No, I didn't take the ball. I now have to see if my Wikipedia entry is up to date. ”With this slogan he was nominated for the German Football Culture Prize 2017 . In the 2017/18 season Delaney played 32 games in which he scored three goals. With 377 km, he achieved the third-largest mileage in the Bundesliga this season.

Borussia Dortmund

For the 2018/19 season, Delaney moved to Borussia Dortmund within the Bundesliga and received a contract that runs until 2022. He scored his first Bundesliga goal for Dortmund in a 2-1 win in the Revierderby against FC Schalke 04 on December 8, 2018, the 14th matchday. At the end of the season, after having been frequently used with Axel Witsel on the double six under Lucien Favre , he was runner-up with BVB, with which he had also competed in the Champions League .

In August 2019, Delaney won his first title with the club when the double winner of the previous season, FC Bayern Munich , was defeated 2-0 in the DFL Supercup . Due to a ligament and knee injury, the Dane fell out after nine games in the central and defensive midfield from November 2019 and was only able to play for BVB again at the 180th Revier derby in mid-May 2020. Delaney played three times for the Danish U18 national team , eleven times for the U19 and twice for the U20 selection. Delaney has been playing for the Danish national team since 2013 . He failed with the team in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup and in the playoffs for the 2016 European Championship . On September 1, 2017, he scored his first goal for the Danish national team in a 4-0 win in the World Cup qualifier against Poland with the goal to make it 1-0. Three days later, he scored three times in a 4-1 win in the World Cup qualifier against Armenia. Delaney played in ten qualifying games and qualified with the Danish national team in the qualifying games against Ireland (0: 0/5: 1) for the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia . At the tournament he was in the Danish squad and was eliminated with the team in the round of 16.
