Career

Beginnings

Emre Can was born to Turkish parents in Frankfurt am Main and grew up in the north-west of Frankfurt . He started playing soccer at SV Blau-Gelb Frankfurt and in 2006 moved to the youth department of Eintracht Frankfurt . In July 2009 he was signed by FC Bayern Munich . There he was a regular player in his first season in the U17, which only reached a midfield position in the B-Junioren-Bundesliga Süd / Südwest at the end of the season. In the following season, the midfielder moved up to the A-youth, but also played several missions for the B-youth. Overall, he was used in the A-Junioren-Bundesliga Süd / Südwest 17 times and scored two goals.

For the 2011/12 season , Can received an amateur contract and was part of the squad of the second team of FC Bayern Munich in the Regionalliga Süd . He made his debut in the men's division on August 27, 2011 (4th matchday) in a 2-1 win in the away game of FC Bayern II against SV Waldhof Mannheim .

Establishment in the professional sector

On February 22, 2012 Can was in the Champions League game at FC Basel for the first time in the squad for a competitive game of the first team. In the 0-1 defeat in the first leg of the last 16 , however, he was not used. On February 26, 2012 in a 2-0 home win against FC Schalke 04 , he was part of the Bundesliga squad for the first time . Again, he was not used. Can signed a professional contract for the 2012/13 season . He made his first competitive appearance for the professional team of FC Bayern on August 12, 2012 in a 2-1 victory in the DFL Supercup against Borussia Dortmund , where he was replaced by Holger Badstuber in the 70th minute . He made his first Bundesliga appearance on April 13, 2013 in a 4-0 home win against 1. FC Nürnberg , while the DFL recorded his first Bundesliga goal on April 28, 2013 in a 1-0 home win against SC Freiburg . Can touched the free-kick from the edge of the area by Xherdan Shaqiri lightly with his head.

For the 2013/14 season Can moved to league competitor Bayer 04 Leverkusen , where he signed a four-year contract that included a buy-back option for FC Bayern Munich and a release clause. His debut for Bayer 04 Leverkusen he gave on August 31, 2013 (4th Round) in the 0: 2 defeat in the away match against FC Schalke 04 with Substitutes for Stefan Reinartz in the 80th minute. As a regular player, Can made 39 competitive appearances for Bayer 04 (four goals, five assists), finished fourth with the team and eliminated with them in the last sixteen of the Champions League.

For the 2014/15 season , Can switched to English runners-up Liverpool FC via the release clause , for whom he lost on August 25, 2014 (2nd matchday) in the 3-1 loss in the away game against Manchester City with a substitute for Joe Allen in the 75 Minute debuted. He scored his first league goal on November 8, 2014 (11th matchday) in a 2-1 defeat in the home game against Chelsea with the goal to make it 1-0 in the 9th minute. In his debut season he made 40 compulsory appearances for Liverpool.

Can also played regularly in his second season at Liverpool FC and played 30 league games. He was initially set up by Brendan Rodgers as a defender or full-back, but coach Jürgen Klopp let him play in his preferred position in defensive midfield. In the 6-0 win against the later relegated Aston Villa on February 14, 2016, he scored his only goal of the season with the 3-0 goal. In the Europa League , Can played all games except for the semi-final first leg and was therefore also present in the final defeat against FC Sevilla . Can also played in the League Cup final against Manchester City , which was lost 3-1 on penalties. In this penalty shootout, he was the only successful shooter on his team.

His goal to 1: 0 against FC Watford on the 35th day of the season 2016/17 was in England on the BBC telecast Match of the Day voted goal of the month of May and the goal of the year. In total, the midfielder came for the Reds on 167 missions, in which he was 14 times successful in front of goal and played twelve goals from his teammates.

Juventus Turin

For the 2018/19 season Can moved to the Italian Serie A at Juventus Turin on a free transfer . He signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2022. In his first season he made 29 league appearances under head coach Massimiliano Allegri (twenty times from the start), in which he scored four goals. He also played six times in the Champions League (twice from the start), in which Juventus was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Ajax Amsterdam . At the end of the season, Can won the championship with Juventus , having previously won the Supercup .

At the beginning of September 2019 - one day after the transfer window had closed - Can was not appointed to the squad for the Champions League group stage by the new head coach Maurizio Sarri . He then publicly criticized the club and said that he would not have stayed at Juventus if he had found out about the non-nomination sooner and that the promises to the contrary made to him were decisive for staying at Juventus.

“I was in talks with other clubs and it was a condition for me to stay that I play the Champions League. Clearly: if I had found out three days earlier, I would not have stayed with Juve. Dealing with me was not honest. (...) That is extremely shocking for me. I am mad, angry. (...) Last week I was told something else. "

- Can about his non-nomination for the group stage of the Champions League

As a result, the midfielder was in all national competitive games in the squad, but only made eight appearances, none of which lasted the full season. With the team he lost the game for the Supercup against Lazio Rome without taking any action .

Borussia Dortmund

At the end of January 2020, Can switched to Borussia Dortmund . Initially, it was loaned for a rental fee of one million euros until the end of the 2019/20 season. After fulfilling the “agreed parameters”, BVB would then have been obliged to acquire the transfer rights to Can for 25 million. Just two and a half weeks later, in which he was used in two league and one cup games, Borussia announced the firm commitment of Cans, who signed a contract with a term until June 30, 2024, which will come into effect for the new season.

National team

Can play in the national jersey for the first time for the U15 youth team of the DFB on June 10, 2009 in Langenselbold as part of the Hessentag in the 3-0 victory over the Polish selection. On September 15, 2010 he made his debut in the U17 national team , which won 2-1 in an international test match against the Dutch team in Saarbrücken . He scored his first two goals on October 17, 2010 in Kuusalu, Estonia, in a 6-1 victory over the selection from Bosnia-Herzegovina. He took part in the European Under-17 Championship in Serbia from May 3 to 15, 2011 and was used in all games, including the final, lost 2-5 against the Netherlands. He also took part in the 2011 U17 World Cup in Mexico from June 18 to July 10 , was used seven times and scored his only tournament goal in the 3-2 defeat in the semi-finals against the Mexican selection. With the 4-3 win against Brazil, he and the team won the game for third place.

Because of his Turkish roots, he would have been eligible to play for the Turkish national team, but decided in summer 2011 to play for the German national team. On May 25, 2012 he made his debut in the U19 national team as part of the qualification (elite round) for the European Championship 2012 in a 2-2 win against the selection of Serbia.

On May 28, 2013, Can was appointed to the final squad for the 2013 U21 European Championship in Israel by coach Rainer Adrion . He made his debut on June 9, 2013 in the 0-1 defeat in the second group game against the Spanish U21 national team , when he came on for Sebastian Rode in the 70th minute . Can was also part of the German squad for the 2015 U21 European Championship . He was used four times during the tournament, scoring the goal for the German team in the first group game in a 1-1 draw against Serbia.

He made his international A debut on September 4, 2015 in Frankfurt am Main in a 3-1 victory in the qualifying game for the 2016 European Championship against Poland ; with this competitive game, he is only eligible to play for the DFB .

For the European Championship 2016, Can was appointed to the national team on May 31, 2016 . Most of the time he stayed on the bench, only when three regular players were eliminated in the semifinals against hosts France, he was part of a newly formed team. In the last third he was substituted 0-1 deficit for the final offensive, but the team lost 2-0 and was eliminated.

National coach Joachim Löw nominated Can for the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 in Russia . There he was used in all five games and won the title with the team by beating Chile 1-0 in the final .

On October 13, 2019, in the qualifying game of Group C for the 2020 European Championship against the Estonian national team, he was sent off the field with red in the 14th minute because of an emergency brake ; so he surpassed the negative record of Robert Huth , who was sent off after 15 minutes in 2005.

Others

Cancellation of a meeting with the Turkish President

In May 2018, Can refused to attend a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan a few weeks before the Turkish parliamentary election . The German internationals Mesut Özil and İlkay Gündoğan had taken part and were heavily criticized for this campaign help for Erdoğan as “counter-examples of successful integration”. Can hadn't attended the meeting to which he was also invited.

Expression of sympathy for a controversial military action by Turkey

After completing a game against Albania in the 2020 European Championship qualification on October 11, 2019, the Turkish team lined up in front of their fans and collectively showed the military salute as a statement of support for the Turkish military offensive in northern Syria . Of these, the Turkish international posted Cenk Tosun on the platform Instagram a photo with a unique support comment that both of Can itself and from his team-mate İlkay Gündoğan geliket was. Later both of them withdrew their likes after there was great public outrage.
