European Football Championship 2016 / Germany

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article covers the German national team at the 2016 European Football Championship in France . For the German team it was the twelfth participation in a row and the third time that they participated as world champions. She reached the semi-finals and was eliminated in this against the hosts France .

qualification

Thomas Müller , top scorer of the German team in qualification

Germany completed the qualification for the European Championship in the group D . After the successful World Cup, record scorers Miroslav Klose , Per Mertesacker and captain Philipp Lahm resigned. Bastian Schweinsteiger became the new team captain for Lahm, but due to injuries he only made four appearances and was then represented by Manuel Neuer .

The German team found it difficult to qualify; Most of the games were dominated, but in Poland, despite dominance, the first defeat against Poland had to be accepted. In the home game against Ireland she conceded the equalizer in stoppage time and in Ireland a competitive game was lost against the Irish for the first time. Nevertheless, it was enough for first place in the end.

Overall, national coach Löw used 29 players. Only Jérôme Boateng was used in all ten games, Mario Götze , Toni Kroos , Thomas Müller and Manuel Neuer paused once . Karim Bellarabi , Emre Can and Jonas Hector made their first international matches in qualifying . The best German goalscorer was Thomas Müller with nine goals, who finished third in the list of goalscorers, with second-placed Zlatan Ibrahimović scoring three of his eleven goals in the two playoff games.

In the course of qualification, Germany, which had climbed to first place in the FIFA world rankings after the 2014 World Cup , fell back to third place in the meantime.

preparation

After the successful qualification, the German team played a friendly against hosts France on November 13, 2015 in St-Denis , which they lost 2-0. During the game there were terrorist attacks at the stadium and in Paris . The international game against the Netherlands scheduled for November 17, 2015 in Hanover was canceled 90 minutes before the start of the game because there were indications of a possible attack. On January 24th and 25th, 2016, a meeting of the players and coaches took place in Munich with marketing activities and the preparation for the EM. On March 26, 2016, a game against England was lost 3-2 in Berlin , with Mario Gómez scoring an international goal for the first time since the European Championship in 2012. Three days later they beat Italy 4-1 in Munich . This was the first win against Italy since 1995 and the win with the highest goal difference (5: 2) since 1939. For the two test matches, national coach Joachim Loew called for the first time Jonathan Tah , who also played against England.

The actual preparation began after the end of the Bundesliga season on May 24, 2016, one day later than initially planned in Ascona . The training camp took place together with the U-20 team. On May 29, a team with four newcomers (Brandt, Kimmich, Leno and Weigl) that had played without many regular players lost a benefit game against Slovakia in Augsburg after a 1-0 lead with 1: 3 in sometimes extreme space conditions due to heavy rainfall. The final EM squad was named on May 31, after national coach Löw had named the provisional squad that was still to be reduced on May 17th. On June 4th, a final test against Hungary in Gelsenkirchen was won 2-0. Three days later, we moved into the EM quarters in the Hotel Ermitage in Évian-les-Bains on Lake Geneva .

Squad

On May 17, 2016, a preliminary roster with 27 players was named, which had to be reduced to 23 players. Players from 17 clubs were nominated. On May 31, national coach Löw named the final squad and deleted Karim Bellarabi , Julian Brandt (both Bayer 04 Leverkusen ), Sebastian Rudy ( TSG 1899 Hoffenheim ) and, due to injury, Marco Reus ( Borussia Dortmund ) from the squad. Antonio Rüdiger ( AS Roma ) suffered a cruciate ligament rupture on June 7th during the first training session after moving into the team hotel in Évian-les-Bains and was unable to participate in the tournament. Jonathan Tah (Bayer 04 Leverkusen) was nominated for him . 14 players play in the German Bundesliga , nine in other European leagues. With five players, the German champions and cup winners FC Bayern Munich provided the most players in the German squad. Germany had the youngest squad on average after Jonathan Tah was nominated, but had the most players with European Championship experience (13 players with a total of 69 European Championship games). The ten Spanish players with European Championship experience had played more European Championship games (81). For Bastian Schweinsteiger and Lukas Podolski it was already the seventh finals of a European or World Cup.

In the draw for the six final round groups on December 12, 2015, Germany was ranked in pot 1 as the leader in the UEFA rankings. Germany was drawn as the group head of group C. Opponents are Northern Ireland as well as the two co-hosts of the last European Championship Poland and Ukraine. Germany has a positive balance against all three. There were eight wins, four draws and two defeats against Northern Ireland in 14 games - both in qualifying for the European Championship 1984 when Germany had lost two European Championship qualifiers for the last time before this qualification and only reached the finals through the more goals scored - the direct comparison didn't count at the time. Before the draw, team manager Oliver Bierhoff wanted the Northern Irish to be one of the three group opponents, as he had achieved his fastest hat trick in Northern Ireland . Germany and Northern Ireland are also group opponents in the qualification for the 2018 World Cup, which begins after the EM . Qualifying opponents Poland had previously been opponents 20 times. 13 games were won, six ended in a draw and only one was lost. However, they have never lost to Ukraine before. In five games there were two home wins and three draws in Ukraine. Four of them took place as part of qualifications for the 1998 and 2002 World Championships . Germany had previously played six times in Paris and four times in Saint-Denis (also listed under Paris in many statistics), but never played in Lille.

After the opening win against Ukraine, in which Bastian Schweinsteiger , who came on as a substitute in the 90th minute, scored the 2-0 goal in stoppage time, the German team changed to only one position in the second game against Poland: the one who was fit again Mats Hummels replaced Shkodran Mustafi , who scored the first goal in the first game. After the goalless game, national coach Löw changed the line-up to two positions for the third game against Northern Ireland: Joshua Kimmich came into play for Benedikt Höwedes on the right full-back and interpreted the role more offensively, which enlivened the attacking game. Mario Gómez also came into play for Julian Draxler , but took over from Mario Götze , who moved into midfield. It was Gómez who scored the only goal of the game after Thomas Müller's preliminary work . Since the Poles only won 1-0 against Ukraine and thus scored one goal less than Germany, the German team became group winners.

Knockout phase

As the winners of Group C, Germany met third in Group B, Slovakia, in the round of 16 on June 26, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. in Villeneuve-d'Ascq (Lille). Against the Slovaks there were previously seven wins and three defeats in ten games, most recently in a preparation game before the European Championship in Augsburg with 1: 3. The German team won two competitive games. After an undisputed 3-0 victory, Germany will face the Italian team in the quarter-finals, against which Germany lost in the previous European Championship in the semi-finals. Against Italy there have been eight wins, ten draws and 15 defeats in 33 games so far, but no competitive win. In the last friendly match in March, however, one of the two biggest wins against the Italians, who had scored 1-1 against Spain five days earlier, was achieved.

Against the Italians, Löw initially only changed the team in one position: For the ex-Schalke Draxler, who was still awarded as Man of the match against Slovakia, Schalke Benedikt Höwedes came into the team, as Löw was on a three-man defensive surrounded. After a quarter of an hour, Sami Khedira had to be replaced because of adductor problems. For him, Bastian Schweinsteiger came on the field, who took over the captain's armband from his representative Manuel Neuer and thus for the first time came to a longer period at the EM. He also scored the first goal, but it was not recognized because of a foul. There were no further scoring chances on either side, as the Italians in particular prevented Toni Kroos from playing in the build-up game and were unable to assert themselves against the German central defenders. In the second half, Mesut Özil scored the opening goal after Gómez and Hector worked on it. Gómez still had the chance to increase to 2-0, but failed to Gianluigi Buffon and had to be replaced shortly afterwards due to muscular problems. Draxler came back to the team for him, but could no longer provide any impulses. Instead, the Italians were able to equalize with a hand penalty after an unintentional handball by Boateng in the penalty area. Since there were no more goals after that, there was a penalty shoot-out. Three German players shot here for the first time, but also four Italians, which is a new negative record in European championships. With 6: 5 the German team finally prevailed and for the first time against Italy in a tournament. The downside was the suspension for Mats Hummels in the semifinals, who received the second yellow card , and the injuries to Khedira and Gómez. While Khedira failed for the semifinals, the tournament was ended prematurely for Gómez. France were the opponents in the semi-finals. Germany had never played against France in European championships. The overall balance against the French is negative. In previous 27 games, there were only nine wins and six draws (with one win on penalties), but twelve defeats, most recently on November 13th on the night of terror in Paris . In competitive games - all at world championships - the balance sheet is positive: two wins, one draw with victory on penalties and one defeat - in the game for third place at the 1958 World Cup.

National coach Löw was again forced to change the team due to the suspension of Hummels and the injury-related failures of Gómez and Khedira. So he returned to the back four, in which Höwedes took over from Hummels. Emre Can took the place of Khedira , making it his first European Championship game. The place of Kroos took over captain Schweinsteiger, whose use was long questionable. Kroos moved further forward and thus had more freedom to build up the game. Draxler returned to the starting XI and was used again on the left, while Müller took over from Gómez. After a stormy initial phase of the French, in which Neuer was able to fend off a shot from Griezmann, the German team got the game more and more under control and had good chances to score, but they could not be used. In stoppage time of the first half, Schweinsteiger got the ball in the penalty area at a corner and referee Rizzoli decided on a penalty that Griezmann was able to convert. At the beginning of the second half, the Germans came under pressure again, but were then able to take control of the game again. After almost an hour Boateng had to be replaced injured, Mustafi came for his second assignment. Since the scoring chances that had been created could not be used in the second half either, Löw reinforced the attack and brought Götze for Can in the 67th minute, who was unable to give the game any new impulses. Five minutes later, however, the German defense got bogged down in the build-up of the game in their own penalty area, so that the French got the ball back, Paul Pogba crossed in front of the goal and Neuer was only able to clap the ball at the feet of Griezmann, who did not miss the chance and increased to 2-0. The subsequent substitution of Leroy Sané for Schweinsteiger could not turn the tide. This was the first time since 1958 that Germany was eliminated from a major tournament in the semi-finals against the hosts and against France. After the tournament was over, three players from the German team were nominated for the team of the tournament : Jérôme Boateng , Joshua Kimmich and Toni Kroos .

Germany was able to gain nine points in the FIFA world rankings through the European Championship games, hold fourth place and make up six points on third Colombia , but lost points on world rankings Argentina , who was second at the Copa America Centenario during the same period 3rd place and gained more points, as well as the second placed Belgians, who gained eight points more. In addition, Copa winner Chile , who is still in 5th place, was able to make up a few points on Germany. The two finalists France and Portugal, who climbed to 7th and 6th place, were also able to narrow the gap to the top.

Premium regulation

As in the 2014 World Cup , the DFB awarded every national player in the German national team a record prize of 300,000 euros for winning the title. For participation in the final, each player would have received 150,000 euros. The semi-final entry was rewarded with 100,000 euros per player. The bonuses were distributed to all players in the squad, regardless of the number of their assignments. If they had been eliminated in the quarter-finals, each player would have received 50,000 euros. In the event of a failure before the quarter-finals, bonus payments by the association would not be applicable.
