European Football Championship 2021 / Germany

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article covers the German national team at the Pan-European Football Championship in 2021 . It is the thirteenth participation in a row for the German team.

qualification

For the qualification , the German team was drawn into the group with the Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Belarus (Belarus) and Estonia. Before the first game, national coach Löw announced that he no longer wanted to plan with the 2014 world champions Müller , Hummels and Boateng . He stayed with this decision as Antonio Rüdiger in April 2019 and Niklas Süle in October 2019 due to injury and, despite the defensive problems, especially in the second half against the Netherlands and Argentina.

Löw used a total of 29 players, but only Joshua Kimmich took part in all eight games. Serge Gnabry , İlkay Gündoğan and captain Manuel Neuer each had seven missions . Niklas Stark played his first international match in the last qualifying game when he was substituted on in the 65th minute. In the friendly against Argentina in October, Nadiem Amiri , Robin Koch , Suat Serdar and Luca Waldschmidt , who also played in the following qualifying games, made their first international match. The top scorer with eight goals was Serge Gnabry. Their first international goal was scored by Matthias Ginter (to lead 1-0 in a 4-0 win over Belarus) and Marcel Halstenberg (to lead 1-0 in a 2-0 win in Northern Ireland). A total of eleven players contributed to the 30 qualifying goals. Only England (4.6) and Belgium (4) scored more goals per game than the German team.

The average age of the team was just over 26 years only for the first game against the Netherlands, otherwise it was around 25.7 years and always below the average age of the opposing team, so that the reporting often referred to a young team.

preparation

The preparation should start in March with two games, with the team first playing in Madrid against Spain and five days later in Nuremberg against Italy . Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , both games have been canceled. For a training camp in Seefeld in Tirol ( Austria ), which was supposed to start on May 26th, a game against Switzerland was planned for May 31st in Basel , which was also canceled.

Finals

Even before the qualification it was clear that the German team would play two group games in Munich if they qualified . As one of the six best teams in the qualification, she can also play the third group game in Munich. Due to the selection of the venues, the team could not be drawn against England, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands. Since the FIFA world ranking leader Belgium qualified as the best team, Belgium could not be drawn into the German group. The draw was drawn for the German team, world champions France and defending champions Portugal, as well as a team that still has to qualify via the playoffs in March 2020. Should this be Hungary, it would be the first competitive game against the Hungarians since the World Cup final in 1954. Against France, the overall balance is negative. In 31 games there were nine wins, eight draws and 14 defeats. The last time they met was in the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League . After a goalless home game, the away game was lost 2-1. At the last European Championship, the German team failed due to a 2-0 defeat in the semi-finals against the French, the only European Championship game so far between the two teams. The last victory for the German team came in the quarter-finals of the 2014 World Cup. Against Portugal, the record is positive in 18 games with ten wins, five draws and three defeats. In European Championship games there were two wins (2008 and 2012), one draw (1984) and one defeat (2004).

If the German team wins the group, they would - unless the venues change - play in Bucharest against the third in Group A, B or C, and one day later in Dublin against the winner in Group D, e.g. B. England. If she were one of the top four thirds in the group, either the group B winner with Belgium or the group C winner with the Netherlands would be opponents in the round of 16, with a day early in Budapest or Bilbao.
