Beginnings and youth

Jonathan Tah had his career in the youth teams of the Hamburg district club Altona 93 and SC Concordia started before in the 2009 youth academy of Hamburger SV moved. He developed into a regular player in all teams. In January 2013, he extended his contract, which expired in summer 2014, to June 30, 2016. Clubs from the English Premier League were also interested in signing Tah.

Professional at Hamburger SV

Tah at HSV training (2014)

From February 2013 he trained once a week with the professionals and moved up to the professional squad for the 2013/14 season , in which coach Thorsten Fink planned with him as the fourth central defender after Heiko Westermann , Johan Djourou and Lasse Sobiech . Tah made his competitive debut on August 4, 2013 in the first round of the DFB Cup , when he came on for Heiko Westermann in the 83rd minute of the 4-0 win against SV Schott Jena . At 17 years, five months and 23 days, he replaced Mustafa Kučuković (17 years, ten months and six days in 2004) as the youngest HSV player to have played in a competitive game since the beginning of the Bundesliga (in March 2018 he was in this Ranking of Josha Vagnoman , who made his debut in the Bundesliga at the age of 17 years, two months and 27 days). Tah made his Bundesliga debut on August 24, 2013 when he came on for Zhi Gin Lam in the 1-0 defeat at Hertha BSC shortly before the end of the game . A week later he was in the north derby against Werder Bremen , which was lost 2-0, in the starting line-up for the first time. As a result, Tah developed into a regular under the new coach Bert van Marwijk until the end of the first half of the season. At the end of November 2013, he extended his contract term by two years to June 30, 2018. Tah was also in the starting line-up on the first two match days of the second half of the season in the 3-0 defeats against Schalke and Hoffenheim . At the beginning of February 2014, details of his contract became public. Under the new coach Mirko Slomka , the 18-year-old Tah only made a brief appearance on the penultimate match day against FC Bayern Munich - also because of the club's sporting situation, the contract details that have become public and his upcoming professional qualification . During this time he was in the second team and the A-youth team, who played like the pros against relegation.

Fortuna Dusseldorf

After Tah had not been used in the first round of the German Cup and the first two match days, he was on 1 September 2014 to the end of season 2014/15 in the 2. Bundesliga at Fortuna Dusseldorf borrowed. He made his debut for Fortuna on September 15, 2014 in a 2-0 away win against 1. FC Nürnberg from the 59th minute. He quickly rose to become one of the team's top performers. In the first half of the season, he suspended two games because of a hamstring. On February 8, 2015, the 20th matchday, Tah was sent off the pitch in a 1-1 draw against Karlsruher SC in the 39th minute because of two yellow cards within just three minutes with yellow-red and for the next league game against Erzgebirge Aue closed. At the end of the season, which Fortuna Düsseldorf finished in tenth place, Tah had 23 competitive appearances (all in the league) in which he had given a goal assist.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen

For the start of training in the 2015/16 season on July 1, Tah initially returned to HSV, but traveled a few days later to the U-19 European Championship , which began on July 6 in Greece . Even before he took part in the tournament, he informed the club that he wanted to move to Bayer 04 Leverkusen . On July 16, Tah signed a five-year contract with the Werkself , dated June 30, 2020.

He made his competitive debut for Bayer Leverkusen on August 8, 2015 in the first round of the DFB Cup in the game at Sportfreunde Lotte , in which he played for the entire game. He made his first Champions League appearance on September 16, 2015 in the home game against BATE Baryssau over the entire season. Following on from this, he played all 28 competitive games in the first half of the season.

His contract with the Werkself runs until 2023.

National team career

Because of his father's origins, Tah had the opportunity to play for the Ivorian national team in addition to the German team. In an interview from January 2014 - when he was already active for German youth selections - he had not yet made a decision. Tah played for the German U17 selection , which he led as team captain. With her he won the Algarve Cup in February 2013 . He also played five times for the U16 team . In the 6-0 victory of the U19 team over the team from Kazakhstan , Tah scored the 4-0 in the 88th minute on October 9, 2014. He also led his national team on March 31, 2015 when they qualified for the 2015 U19 European Championship in a 6-0 win over the Czech Republic .

On 18 March 2016 it appointed national coach Joachim Loew for the first time in the squad of the senior national team for the friendly matches against the English (26 March), and Italian choices (March 29). He made his debut in the 3-2 loss to England at the Olympiastadion Berlin when he came on for Mats Hummels in the second half .

On June 8, 2016, Löw nominated Tah for the German squad for the European Championship in France after Antonio Rüdiger injured his cruciate ligament the day before . Tah did not come to use during the tournament. The German team was eliminated in the semifinals after a 2-0 defeat against the hosts . Tah was part of the extended squad for the 2018 World Cup and took part in the national team's training camp in Eppan , but did not travel to the tournament in Russia because national coach Joachim Löw did not appoint him to the final World Cup squad.

At the U21 European Championship 2019 , he led the German team as team captain to the final, which was lost 1: 2 to Spain .
