Julian Baumgartlinger (born January 2, 1988 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian football player . In his career he has played mainly in Germany and for two years in his home country at FK Austria Wien . He has been under contract with German Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen since the 2016/17 season . He is the team captain of the Austrian national team . He mainly plays in the defensive midfield position.

Julian Baumgartlinger started playing soccer for USC Mattsee at the age of five. In 2001 he switched to the youth team at TSV 1860 Munich . He played his first game with the amateurs in the 2006/07 season in the Regionalliga Süd , in which he played 37 games until 2009 and scored one goal. In the 2007/08 season he was not formally in the professional squad, but made his professional debut in the 2nd Bundesliga on November 12, 2007 in the home game against Borussia Mönchengladbach . From the summer of 2008 he was a member of the professional squad. By 2009 he was used in 13 first-team league games.

In the summer of 2009 Baumgartlinger signed a contract with the Austrian Bundesliga club FK Austria Wien until 2012, played 61 league games for the club and scored one goal.

In summer 2011 he moved to 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the German Bundesliga . Here he developed into a leading player and was team captain in the 2015/16 season . He scored his first Bundesliga goal on February 12, 2016 (21st matchday) in a 2-1 win at home against FC Schalke 04 with the goal in the 79th minute. For Mainz 05 he played 124 Bundesliga games in which he scored two goals. His contract ran until 2019.

For the season 2016/17 changed Baumgartlinger to Bayer 04 Leverkusen . There he received a contract that initially ran until the end of June 2020. In the 4-1 away win against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on January 20, 2018, the 19th matchday of the 2017/18 season, he scored for Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga for the first time. In October 2019, the Austrian's contract period at Bayer Leverkusen was extended to June 2021.

National team

Baumgartlinger played since the U-16 in the youth teams of the ÖFB . In 2009 he was the captain of the U-21 national team . On September 9, 2009 he made his debut in the senior national team in a World Cup qualifier against the selection of Romania . He scored his first goal for the ÖFB selection on June 3, 2014 in a friendly against the Czech selection to make it 2-1.

At the 2016 European Championship in France , Baumgartlinger played all group games with the Austrian team over the entire duration of the game. The team was eliminated as the bottom of the group with only one draw.

In August 2016 Baumgartlinger was appointed captain of the national team as the successor to the resigned Christian Fuchs .

Baumgartlinger is the father of a daughter born in early January 2017.
