Mitchell-Elijah Weiser (born April 21, 1994 in Troisdorf ) is a German soccer player . He has been under contract with Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen since the 2018/19 season .

Club career

Beginnings and Bundesliga debut

Mitchell Weiser was born in Troisdorf, North Rhine-Westphalia , when his father Patrick Weiser was under contract with 1. FC Köln . In the second half of the 1990s, Mitchell Weiser lived in France , where his father played for Stade Rennes . Shortly before the turn of the millennium, the family returned to Germany when the father signed with VfL Wolfsburg in 1999 . In 2000, Mitchell, who was six at the time, came to TVE Veltenhof in Braunschweig . In August 2005, the father returned to 1. FC Köln and the then eleven-year-old Mitchell went to a test training session at 1. FC Köln, for whose D-youth he then played. In the C-youth Weiser was used as a striker. As a younger year, he came to the B-Jugend , which played in the U-17 Bundesliga , and was used as a winger . In the 2010/11 season , Weiser, as an older year, was still used in the external positions. In the west season they placed themselves first in front of Borussia Dortmund ; In the nationwide semifinals, the Cologne U-17 prevailed against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and in the final SV Werder were defeated 3-2.

In the following season he moved up to the A-youth . The team's success in league football failed to materialize; Weiser saw the red card three times and therefore did not play in all games. Nevertheless, he trained in the professional team from winter.

On February 8, 2012 (20th match day) in the 0-1 home defeat against Borussia Mönchengladbach II , Weiser was in the starting line-up of the second team . On February 25, 2012 (23rd matchday) he made his Bundesliga debut in the 2-0 home defeat against Bayer 04 Leverkusen when he came on for Mato Jajalo in the 74th minute .

Via Munich to Kaiserslautern

For the 2012/13 season , Weiser moved to the German record champions FC Bayern Munich , with whom he signed a licensed player contract that was valid until June 30, 2015. He made his league debut for the second team on August 22, 2012 (9th matchday) in a 1-0 win at home against 1. FC Nürnberg II . He played his first competitive game for the professional team on October 31, 2012 in a 4-0 home win against 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the second main round of the DFB Cup with a substitute for Rafinha in the 79th minute. Weiser scored a goal in a total of nine appearances for the U23.

In order to give Weiser match practice, FC Bayern Munich and the second division 1. FC Kaiserslautern agreed in early January 2013 on a loan deal that would run until the end of the 2012/13 season . He made his debut on the 20th matchday in a 1-0 away win against TSV 1860 Munich in the starting line-up. In the 86th minute he was substituted for Florian Riedel . For 1. FCK Weiser came to 13 second division appearances in which he scored two goals. With his team, he finished third in the table. In the relegation, however, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim had to be defeated.

Return to Munich

Weiser returned to Bayern Munich for the 2013/14 season . His contract was valid until the end of the 2014/15 season.

Under the new coach Pep Guardiola , he only made three league appearances and played mainly in the second team again. With his team, Weiser became German champions and DFB Cup winners. In the 2014/15 season , Weiser drew attention to himself with good performances in the second half of the season after he had not been used by the professionals in the first half of the season. On the 22nd matchday (February 21, 2015) he scored his first Bundesliga goal in a 6-0 away win at SC Paderborn 07 .

Hertha BSC

In June 2015, Weiser moved to Hertha BSC on a free transfer , where he received a contract valid until June 30, 2018. He made his Bundesliga debut for the club on August 21, 2015 (2nd matchday) in a 1-1 home game against Werder Bremen , substituting for Jens Hegeler in the 75th minute. He scored his first goal in the Hertha jersey in the 1-0 away win on matchday 10 on October 24, 2015 in the game against FC Ingolstadt 04 when he scored the winning goal in the 11th minute of the game.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen

For the 2018/19 season, Weiser moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen within the Bundesliga . In May 2018 he signed a contract that runs until 2023.

National team

On February 10, 2010 Weiser played his first international match , which he played for the U-16 national team , in a 6-0 win in Cyprus against the selection of the hosts. On September 4, 2010, he scored his first international goal in his first appearance for the U-17 national team in a 2-0 victory over the Azerbaijani selection. With the U-17 juniors , he took part in the U-17 European Championship in Serbia from May 3 to 15, 2011 . As group runner-up and the 2-0 victory in the semifinals over the selection of Denmark, he came with the team in the final, which was lost against the selection of the Netherlands with 2: 5. Weiser, who acted as right full-back during the tournament, was elected to the team of the tournament by the UEFA technical team .

A few weeks later he was also a member of the German squad, which reached third place at the U-17 World Cup in Mexico under coach Steffen Freund . In the opinion of the FIFA Technical Study Group, Weiser was one of the outstanding players on his team as an "agile and powerful right midfielder with good passing game and good technique" and contributed to the tournament result with three goals in six appearances.

On February 29, 2012 he made his debut in Osnabrück in the U-18 team when he came on as a substitute for Marcel Deelen in the 80th minute of the 1-0 win over the Netherlands . For the U-20 national team , he was used for the first time on September 6, 2013 as part of an "international game round" (with Italy, Poland and Switzerland). In the 2-0 win against Poland in Pfullendorf , he played for 65 minutes before he had to give way to Janik Haberer , another debutant.

Due to consistently strong performances at Hertha BSC , Horst Hrubesch appointed him to the squad of the U-21 national team for the first time on November 6, 2015 for games against the selections of Azerbaijan and Austria . He made his international debut for the U-21 national team on November 13, 2015 in Regensburg in the qualifying match for the 2017 European Championships in Poland in a 3-1 win over the Azerbaijani selection.

With the U-21 national team, Mitchell Weiser became European champion in Poland on June 30, 2017. In the final against Spain, Weiser scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 win.
