Exequiel Alejandro Palacios (born October 5, 1998 in Famaillá ) is an Argentine football player . He comes from the youth of River Plate , for which he was used in the first team between 2015 and 2019. Since the beginning of the second half of the 2019/20 season , he has been under contract with German Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen .

Club career

Exequiel Palacios comes from the youth of the multiple Argentine champion River Plate . In 2015 he was first used in the first team. On November 8th of the year he made his professional football debut by substituting at halftime for Lautaro Arellano in the 2-0 home defeat by Newell's Old Boys . With the club, the midfielder won the Copa Libertadores , Recopa Sudamericana and Copa Argentina once .

On January 1, 2020, Palacios moved to the German Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen . Both parties agreed on a contract with a term until mid-2025. Since Palacios had to accept a red card in his last competitive game for River Plate on December 8, 2019 in the home game against Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro in the 77th minute of the game he has been suspended from the Argentine Association for three competitive games. The suspension remained after the move to Leverkusen, which meant that he could not be used in the first three games in the Bundesliga. Palacios finally made his competitive debut for the Werkself on February 5, 2020 in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup against VfB Stuttgart . In the 2-1 success of his team, he played from the start and the full season.
