Sven Bender (born April 27, 1989 in Rosenheim ) is a German football player . He began his career in the men's division at TSV 1860 Munich in the 2nd Bundesliga . In 2009 he went to the Bundesliga for Borussia Dortmund . He played for the black and yellow for eight years and earned a high reputation among the club's supporters through his style of play and his commitment to the team. He has been under contract with Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen since the 2017/18 season . There he plays - as he did in Munich and during their youth together - with his identical twin brother Lars . Sven Bender was used in the defensive midfield especially in the first few years , now he mainly acts as a central defender .

For the German national team , he played seven games from 2011 to 2013. With the German Olympic team , he took part in the soccer tournament of the 2016 Summer Games in Brazil , where the team won the silver medal.

Origin and education

The son of a customs officer from Rosenheim is the identical and younger twin brother of Lars Bender , who is also a professional footballer . Both grew up in Brannenburg near Rosenheim, graduated from secondary school and dropped out of business apprenticeships.

The Benders counted Piotr Nowak and Abédi Pelé , both of whom were active at TSV 1860 Munich in the 1990s , among their idols. You are the 14th pair of brothers who played in the German national soccer team (including the GDR selection ).

Bender started playing football at TSV Brannenburg at the age of four and moved to SpVgg Unterhaching at the age of ten and to TSV 1860 Munich in 2002 . He became German champion in the 2005/06 season with the U17 of TSV 1860 Munich. In the 2006/07 season he was nominally part of the TSV professional squad, but played primarily with the U23 in the Regionalliga Süd . There he played 16 times until 2007 and scored one goal. Bender made his debut in professional football on December 18, 2006 at the home game against FC Erzgebirge Aue in the 2nd Bundesliga . In November 2007, the term of Bender's contract was extended to 2011. In 1860 he made 65 appearances in the 2nd Bundesliga, where he scored one goal.

In the summer of 2009, Bender moved to Borussia Dortmund . There he made his Bundesliga debut on September 19, 2009 in Hanover (1: 1). He then established himself as a regular in the defensive midfield due to the injury-related loss of captain Sebastian Kehl under coach Jürgen Klopp . He scored his first Bundesliga goal for BVB on February 12, 2011 in a game against 1. FC Kaiserslautern . With Borussia Dortmund he became German champion for the first time in the 2010/11 season and defended the title in the following season . In the same year he won the DFB Cup with the team .

He was also on the pitch in the 2013 Champions League final at London's Wembley Stadium .

In 2013 Bender won the DFL Supercup with Borussia Dortmund , which was defended the following year. In 2017 he won the DFB Cup for the second time in his career with BVB. Sven Bender received media attention when, in the semifinals against FC Bayern Munich, he spectacularly hit a ball that would have gone into BVB's goal from the line.

His contract with Borussia Dortmund last ran until June 30, 2021.

On July 13, 2017, he moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the Bundesliga , where he met his twin brother Lars, who is the team's captain.

Bender took part with the German U17 national team in the 2006 European Championship in Luxembourg , where the German selection came fourth. In 2008 he was in the German squad for the U19 European Championship in the Czech Republic , where the team won the title.

On February 4, 2011, he was appointed for the first time by national coach Joachim Loew in the A-selection for the friendly against Italy . He made his international debut on March 29, 2011 in a 2-1 defeat in the friendly against Australia , in which he was used for the full season. For the EM 2012 he was appointed to the provisional squad, but unlike his brother, he was not included in the final squad.

On July 15, 2016, he was appointed to the DFB squad for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro . There Bender and the German team won the silver medal after the defeat in the final against Brazil on penalties.

Together with the German Olympic football team, he received the Silver Laurel Leaf on November 1, 2016 .

During his time at Borussia Dortmund, Bender was nicknamed "Manni", based on the well-known footballer Manfred "Manni" Bender . He is also called "Iron-Manni" (because of his fighting style, but still mostly fair play).

No Bundesliga player has ever been replaced as often in the first half or at break as Sven Bender. Up to the 9th matchday of the 2019/20 season there were 27 substitutions before or with the half-time whistle, one more than for Olaf Thon and Martin Wagner (26 each).
