Manfred "Manni" Bender (born May 24, 1966 in Munich ) is a former German soccer player and now a coach . He played in the Bundesliga from 1989 to 1999 for FC Bayern Munich , Karlsruher SC and TSV 1860 Munich and played a total of 229 games for these clubs and scored 42 goals.
Career as a player
FC Bayern Munich (1989–1992)
In the summer of 1989 Manfred Bender moved from second division SpVgg Unterhaching to Bayern Munich . He came as a talent and winner of the regional cup , which he won with the selection of the regional association of Bavaria 4-2 on penalties against the selection of the regional association of Hesse . Despite the great competition - Jürgen Kohler ( 1. FC Köln ), Alan McInally ( Aston Villa ) and Radmilo Mihajlović ( Dinamo Zagreb ) also moved to the record champions - he made 20 appearances in his first season in which he scored two goals. He made his Bundesliga debut on August 5, 1989 (2nd match day) when he was substituted on for Radmilo Mihajlović in the goalless draw in the away game against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 71st minute. His first Bundesliga goal was the 2-0 final score on October 27, 1989 (15th matchday) at FC St. Pauli . At the end of the season he won his first professional football title - the championship title.
Bender's second season started like the first had ended - with a title win. On July 31, 1990 he won the DFB Supercup with Bayern with 4-1 goals against 1. FC Kaiserslautern . In his second season, 1990/91 , Bayern finished second in the championship and Bender was a regular player with 33 appearances and five goals. The following season 1991/92 was unusually bad for Bayern Munich. Three coaches ( Jupp Heynckes , Søren Lerby and Erich Ribbeck ) "wore out" the club, but it could not prevent the club from slipping to tenth place in the table. Guilty parties were also looked for in the players' squad and at the same time they looked around for new players. Bender moved to Karlsruhe in the summer of 1992 and Mehmet Scholl came to Munich in return.
Karlsruher SC (1992–1996)
In addition to Bender, the winger Sergej Kirjakow also came to KSC , so that the Schäfer protégés developed into a strong attacking team. In the 1992/93 season , the team reached sixth place and qualified for the UEFA Cup competition. The attacking midfielder Bender made a significant contribution to the successful performance of KSC in this competition (the highlight was certainly the 7-0 win in the home game against Valencia CF ) . Another success with the KSC was reaching the DFB Cup final in 1996 .
TSV 1860 Munich / Karlsruher SC (1996-2000)
In 1996 Bender switched to the "Löwen", for which he completed three seasons - with a decreasing number of missions, the latter with only six. He then returned for one season to the second division club Karlsruher SC, but only made two appearances.
1. FC Saarbrücken and the end (2000-2004)
From 2000 to 2002 he played 35 times for the second division club 1. FC Saarbrücken and scored five goals. At the end of his football career he played for the major league clubs SV Wilhelmshaven and FC Ismaning , and then for the Bavarian national division TSV Eching .
Career as a coach
Bender began his coaching career in May 2006 with the Austrian regional league team 1. FC Vöcklabruck . From June 2007 to January 2008 he coached the Austrian Bundesliga club SCR Altach , from which he separated by mutual agreement.
From December 2010 to July 2011 he was assistant coach of the U-20 national team of Nigeria, which won the final of the African Championship on May 1, 2011 3-2 against Cameroon.
Since July 1, 2014 he has been under contract with the Austrian second division team SK Austria Klagenfurt . He was released early on March 16, 2016.
Since June 2017, Bender has been the sporting director of the "German Football Boarding School" (DFI) in Bad Aibling. In September 2018, the Bavarian regional league team FC Pipinsried introduced Bender as an equal coach to the previous player-coach Fabian Hürzeler.
In the winter of 2019, Bender then moved to Türkspor Augsburg as a coach and at the end of the season achieved promotion to the Bayern League with the club via the promotion relegation . After the 5th matchday of the 2019/2020 season, Bender was dismissed from Türkspor on August 8, 2019.
Career as a manager
From March to June 2013 Bender worked as a sports manager at Kickers Offenbach .

The “sloppy genius” was a particular danger when it came to standards.
