The matches for the Austrian soccer championship 2005/06 were played in the " T-Mobile - Bundesliga ", Austria's top division. The second division was sponsored by the "Red-Zac-Erste-Liga", including the third division teams in the three regional leagues West, Middle and East for promotion to the first division. The women played in the ÖFB women's league , which, unlike the men's Bundesliga, was directly hosted by the ÖFB for the championship title and qualification for the international UEFA Women's Cup . The champions of the second division played in a relegation round for promotion to the top women's division.

First performance level - Bundesliga

mode

The T-Mobile Bundesliga was contested with 10 teams, each of which met four times during the entire season. After a varied championship course in the penultimate round, FK Austria Wien secured their 23rd championship title ahead of their pursuers Red Bull Salzburg. Austria's last title win was in 2003. Last year's champion Rapid had to be satisfied with fifth place and missed entry into an international competition. After a race to catch up in the autumn round, newly promoted Ried placed fourth in the table and thus achieved the club's best result in the championship to date. Austria Wien and Red Bull Salzburg qualified for the Champions League, Pasching and cup finalists Mattersburg for the UEFA Cup and Ried for the UI Cup.

useful information

Austria Wien
Frank Stronach announced on November 21, 2005 that he would retire from Austria after the 2006/07 season. On April 24, 2006 Austria keeper Joey Didulica was sentenced at the Vienna Regional Criminal Court to a fine of 60,000 euros for his serious foul on Rapid player Axel Lawarée in the Vienna derby on May 26, 2005. Austria icon Toni Polster was declared persona non grata after his lawsuit against the alleged unlawful dismissal in the previous year in the Horr Stadium and was banned from the stadium. Behind the scenes it was rumored that the real reason was a “coup attempt” against President Stronach planned by Polster. Frenk Schinkels , at the beginning of the season by his own fans with "Stinkels-out" posters, led the violets to the double .

Red Bull Salzburg
The club that made the most headlines and discussions this season was Red Bull Salzburg. After a short time, the cheers for Red Bull's commitment among the hard core of Austria-Salzburg fans had subsided. The denial of the club's history, the renaming and, above all, the abandonment of the purple club colors amounted to the extinction of the traditional club and caused displeasure among fans and a media response in large parts of Europe. After Red Bull even issued stadium bans against supporters who appeared in the old purple uniforms and no rapprochement between the fans and the new club officials was achieved, the Violet-White initiative and the new SV Austria Salzburg were founded , who played in a syndicate with PSV S / W Salzburg in purple jerseys in the Salzburg regional league. After the break with the old Austria supporters, a completely new fan culture developed in the Wals-Siezenheim stadium . On average, around 16,500 spectators came to the “Bullenarena”, which has since been ironically referred to as Austria's largest party zone.

The former purple Austria Salzburg was completely rebuilt after the takeover by Red Bull. The new coach Kurt Jara brought in 18 new players right at the beginning of the season, from the previous purple supports only Arzberger , Suazo , Pichorner , Scharrer , Jank and veteran Winklhofer remained in the squad. After a very bad start, Red Bull Salzburg slipped to penultimate place. At the end of the regular season, the club, which had already been traded as a relegation candidate, was already one of the title contenders as autumn champions . During the winter break, the commitment of Rapid star Andreas Ivanschitz , who was described as not for sale, caused a sensation and uproar among the Hütteldorfer fans, who branded the Burgenlander as " Judas " after his departure from Rapid . In the spring championship came the big breakthrough of the young striker Marc Janko , who had meanwhile been dismissed as a flop . With 11 goals in 17 championship games, the Lower Austrian shot himself to second place on the scorers list and into the team for the Croatian international. In the end, Salzburg played for the championship title until the penultimate round, but lost their own success due to their own weakness away from home and the poor shape of Alexander Manninger, who was brought home from Siena at great expense. Manninger, who was declared a one-shot goal by coach Jara in advance, was out for almost the entire autumn due to a hand and shoulder injury and found a very strong competitor in replacement goalie Arzberger . After his recovery, Jara continued to trust the former team keeper who, however, could not justify the trust placed in him with embarrassing mistakes and too many unnecessary mistakes and ultimately cost his team the title.

After the championship was over, coach Jara was sacked due to possible speculations about player transfers. The duo Giovanni Trapattoni (team boss) and Lothar Matthäus (coach) were signed as successors .

VfB Admira Wacker Mödling
Admira Mödling counted as a secret title contender after the engagement of the Iranian club president Majid Pishyar and his purchases, but never came out of the relegation zone despite the qualitative increase in the squad ( Mandl , Wagner , Flögel , Wimmer , Wallner ).

Conflicts in kickboxing style after the game Admira against Tyrol in Südstadt caused a stir . Some Admirans lost their nerves after the 1: 1, which meant two points lost in the relegation battle, and beat the Tyroleans. Main culprit Mohsen Faraji , an unlisted Iranian squad player from the Südstadt team, who ran onto the field from the stands and initiated the fighting, was banned by the criminal panel for 20 games. Other players involved were Gerd Wimmer (12 games ban), Nino Bule (9 games) and Mahir Sağlık (3 games). On the Tyrolean side, bans have been issued for Željko Pavlović (4 games) and Hannes Aigner (2 games).

Grazer AK
Harald Sükar replaced the previous “champion” president Rudi Roth at the top of the club on June 24, 2005 and caused astonishment and disgruntlement among the red jackets with his assessment of the club's finances: "The financial basis and the athletic team are there. I can put me in the nest I made. " When Sükar realized how bad the club was financially, the emergency sales of the top performers Tokic , Bazina and Aufhauser followed . After the separation from the successful coach Walter Schachner , who moved to TSV 1860 Munich , the triumvirate of 2004 (Roth, Weninger, Schachner) was history. As a replacement for Schachner, the Dane Lars Søndergaard followed the coaching position. On March 31, to the annoyance of many fans, Sükar announced the return of his predecessor Peter Svetits , who is said to have plunged the club into considerable debt during his tenure. During the season, the incumbent GAK manager Hannes Weninger died on July 13, 2005 of years of cancer.

SK Sturm Graz
President Hannes Kartnig made headlines this season with his resignation, the alleged betting affair, the name discussion about the Graz stadium and the rise of some promising talents. On November 7, 2005, Kartnig announced his resignation from the presidency after 13 years. When the designated successor Carlo Platzer withdrew, however, "Tsar Hannes" as Kartnig is called in Graz, was forced to extend his term of office by a further three months and, after the "Blackies" could not find a successor due to the financially precarious situation, reaffirmed in office for three years at the general assembly in spring 2006.

In April 2006 the Graz police announced that storm coach Michael Petrović and player Bojan Filipović were involved in a betting scandal. They were accused of having agreed with the Serb Dragan Antic to ensure that the games against Austria Wien and Red Bull Salzburg were lost. Both Petrovic and Filipovic resisted the allegations. Solid evidence for the allegation could not be produced and the wiretapping protocols could not convince them either. The curious thing about the allegations was the actual results of the two allegedly agreed games: Sturm drew 0-0 against Austria and Filipovic himself scored the opening goal in the 4-0 win over Salzburg.

After the execution of Tookie Williams , California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger faced vehement criticism in his former home. Several parties, organizations and also part of the public demanded the removal of the Arnold Schwarzenegger name from the stadium in Liebenau. Schwarzenegger himself ended this dispute with his hometown by forbidding the city of Graz to continue using his name shortly before Christmas and even sent his ring of honor back to the city of Graz by post . The stadium was then simply called the Graz-Liebenau Stadium for a few days and was renamed the UPC-Arena after a sponsor was found .

The license issue
At the end of April, Senate 5 of the Bundesliga refused to give four clubs permission to play for the next season. However, the Graz clubs Sturm and GAK received this in the second instance after the "unclear wording of the State of Styria's liability
promise ", which was decisive for the non-grant , had been specified. The second test at the first division club SC Schwanenstadt was just as positive . The only negative decision therefore only concerned the relegated VfB Admira Wacker Mödling. The reason given for the license refusal was that the sponsorship money of the Iranian club president Pishyar would not be enforceable, since the headquarters of the "32group" is in Dubai and there is no legal agreement between Austria and the United Arab Emirates . Admira then brought a lawsuit against the license refusal at the Permanent Neutral Arbitration Court. On May 31, 2006, this committee decided to grant the license to Admira, which was thereby able to refrain from going into the regional league or from the already proposed dissolution.

The club from Altach qualified for the first time in its history and as the fifth football club from Vorarlberg for the highest Austrian level.

Second performance level - First League

    General

The "Red Zac-Erste Liga" named after the sponsor is the second highest Austrian league after the T-Mobile-Bundesliga. Like the top division, the first division clubs met four times during the season.

In the penultimate round, SCR Altach was crowned second division champion for the first time with a 1-0 win in the Vorarlberg derby against Lustenau and will thus celebrate its premiere in the first division in the 2006/07 season. The season was extremely exciting, until shortly before the end of the championship five clubs, Austria Lustenau, LASK, Carinthia and the Austria Amateurs were involved in the decision for the championship title in addition to Altach. The debut of the first amateur team of a Bundesliga club in the second division for the young footballers of Vienna Austria was very promising. After a very good start to the season, the Austria Amateurs dominated the autumn season and only fell back a little in the last third of the spring championship. FC Kufstein was relegated to the Regionalliga West one season after promotion.

    Regionalliga West

    General
In the Regionalliga West, FC Lustenau dueled with the Red Bull Salzburg amateur team for the title and promotion to the first division until a few laps before the end.

The fact that Lustenau's 2-0 victory in the opening game against the SAK was initially certified 3-0 for the Nonntaler by the Vorarlberg Football Association (Lustenau put in new signing Özgün despite a yellow card suspension) contributed to the long-lasting tension , but only a week later the Regionalliga West commission suspended the judgment issued by the regional association. Only shortly before the end of the championship, after the direct duel between Lustenau and Red Bull Salzburg, did the third instance finally award the three points to the eventual champions, who from then onwards with the victory over Red Bull and the three points gained on the green table Drop the rest of the field and fix the ascent.

The Salzburg clubs ASK and SAK 1914 made negative headlines. Until the end of the season, the sword of Damocles of a possible bankruptcy hung over the ASK, so that from one round to the next the appearance or the continued existence of the team did not seem assured. At the SAK, on the other hand, President Penco spoke out in favor of voluntary relegation to the national league due to major financial difficulties and thus caused displeasure among its own players. Since a voluntary relegation would have brought a restart in the last division with it, the players continued to fight for relegation, which could not be achieved through the relegation of FC Kufstein from the first division to the regional division. After the SAK was relegated to the regional league, almost the entire fighting team left the club.
