The club goes back to FC Wacker Tirol , which was founded in 2002 and which in 2007 took on the traditional name of Wacker Innsbruck again in memory of the five-time Austrian champions soccer club Wacker Innsbruck and maintains corresponding traditions.

Since August 3, 2016, the professional operations of the club have been outsourced to FC Wacker Innsbruck GmbH, in accordance with the decision of the General Assembly on June 5, 2016 , of which the club is the sole partner.

Coat of arms of the old FC Wacker

When it was founded on June 21, 2002, FC Wacker Tirol saw itself as a kind of unofficial successor to FC Tirol , which had previously gone bankrupt and dissolved. For this reason, FC Wacker Tirol also has a star in its coat of arms, as a symbol of the ten championship titles that FC Tirol was able to claim for itself (see first picture). Since the fans strictly rejected the name FC Wacker Tirol, saw themselves as an Innsbruck club and the club wanted to abandon the image of its predecessor club, which had slipped into bankruptcy, they returned to traditional values and decided to return to the traditional name FC Wacker Innsbruck. However, there are no legal connections to the predecessor club . On February 23, 2007 the change of name to FC Wacker Innsbruck was decided by a majority in the General Assembly, which was carried out on July 1, 2007. A fusion of the Wacker Tirol coat of arms with the former coat of arms of FC Wacker Innsbruck (see third picture) represented the new emblem of the club (second picture). This coat of arms was particularly controversial within the fan clubs; they mostly used the original coat of arms and are committed to introducing it as the club coat of arms. After FC Wacker Innsbruck celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2013, the club members decided in 2014 to symbolically return to their origins.

Fan initiative: Wacker Innsbruck football club

After the bankruptcy of FC Tirol Innsbruck, a group of Innsbruck football fans formed in 2002 to breathe new life into FC Wacker Innsbruck. Under the name Wacker Innsbruck Football Club - abbreviation: FC Wacker Innsbruck , a club was entered in the register of associations. Renaming FC Wacker Tirol was the main interest of the club members. After the two clubs reached an agreement, the Wacker Innsbruck soccer club - abbreviation: FC Wacker Innsbruck - voluntarily dissolved with effect from May 11, 2007. By renaming the club on July 1, 2007, the club members achieved their goal. In a cooperation agreement between the two contractual partners, among other things, the transfer of the word / figurative mark "FC Wacker Innsbruck", the fan operation and mutual support between the club and the fan initiative were regulated. In addition, the Bundesliga club FC Wacker Innsbruck provides the fan initiative with an earmarked amount for fan work and the further development of the football subculture in Innsbruck. The financially troubled club - chairman Gerhard Stocker had to be liable for 800,000 euros for the 2007/08 season to grant a license (with conditions in the second instance) - not only had to bear the costs of changing the CI , but also to the fan initiative To make payment.

The 1913 Myth

The former FC Wacker Innsbruck goes back to a foundation in January 1915. After the First World War , however, 1913 appears to be the founding year. There are several theories about the origin of this year, but they cannot be proven. For Tyrolean football fans , 1913 is still firmly associated with the name FC Wacker Innsbruck . That is why the new FC Wacker Innsbruck had the number 1913 in their coat of arms until June 2014, even though it was founded in 2002.

FC Wacker Tirol was founded on June 21, 2002 under the chairman Michael Bielowski with the club colors black and green and is run as a pure member club. Shortly after the founding of the association was created using the WSG Wattens the syndicate SpG WSG Wattens FC Wacker Tirol received in order not to have to go into the last game class into playing virtually the crew of the syndicate was, however, of Wattens.

The syndicate played in the 2002/03 season in the Regionalliga West under coach Michael Streiter and immediately became champions, after which it was dissolved again. Wacker rose to the second-rate first division with the former Wattens team under the new coach Helmut Kraft , the WSG now played with their amateur team in the fourth-rate Tyrolean regional league. FC Wacker won the championship title straight away in the 2003/04 season and was promoted to the Bundesliga . In the meantime, in March 2003, Gerhard Stocker was elected as the new chairman.

Only two years after the fall of FC Tirol, the state of Tirol had a Bundesliga club again in the 2004/05 season. In the first year in the top Austrian league, Innsbruck could reach 6th place, but ended up only in penultimate place the following year. In the 2006/07 season, the league was only managed thanks to a point deduction for the GAK , the team ended up in last place. During this time, the coaches were changed: After Helmut Kraft left the club in November 2004, he was followed by Stanislaw Tschertschessow , František Straka , Klaus Vogler until Lars Søndergaard was appointed coach in June 2007.

From a sporting point of view, the 2007/08 season was negative, so that after 15 matchdays without a win they were beaten at the bottom of the table. Due to the persistent lack of sporting success, the separation from coach Lars Söndergaard was announced on October 22, 2007 and Helmut Kraft was introduced as the new sports director. Subsequently, the club rose after the second half of the season in the second division.

On April 24, 2008 chairman Gerhard Stocker announced his resignation and the immediate withdrawal from the board, on April 28, 2008 the remaining board and Helmut Kraft agreed to terminate the contract on April 30, 2008. He was subsequently replaced by the former FC Tirol player replaces Walter Kogler , who should prefer young players from his own offspring in the following season.

After relegation from the Bundesliga at the end of the 2007/08 season, Wacker Innsbruck practically “lost” the entire Bundesliga team. The squad for the second-rate first division was mainly supplemented with young players from Tyrol.

In the 2008/09 season, the club's professional team was runner-up in the second-highest first division behind SC Magna Wiener Neustadt . A trend-setting game was the home game against the later promoted SC Magna Wiener Neustadt which took place on April 11, 2009 in front of around 9,000 spectators at the Tivoli in Innsbruck. The Innsbruck team won the away game 3-0. If they had won their home game, the deficit on leaders Wiener Neustadt could have been reduced, but the game was lost 3-1. In the last few rounds, FC Wacker Innsbruck was only able to consolidate 2nd place and Wiener Neustadt was promoted to the Bundesliga. After Gerhard Stocker withdrew from the office of chairman, Johannes Masoner took over the chairmanship for six months in April 2009 , followed by Kaspar Plattner in December 2009 .

The Innsbruck fans cheer for the championship title in the first division and the return to the Bundesliga.

After a hard-fought 2009/10 season, the professional team of FC Wacker Innsbruck fixed their promotion to the Bundesliga on the last matchday on May 28, 2010 with a 2-0 win over Red Bull Juniors . The game had to be rescheduled because of the relocation of a natural turf in the Red Bull Arena in Wals-Siezenheim to the Paschinger Waldstadion in Upper Austria . Around 5000 Innsbruckers accompanied their team to Pasching . After relegation to the 2007/08 season and two years in the Austrian second division, the team coached by Walter Kogler managed to return to the Bundesliga in 2010.

There they thrilled the fans with a 4-0 win in the first round against Rapid Vienna and were able to establish themselves in the secured midfield with 6th place. In the 2011/12 season they even played for the European Cup for a long time, only to end up in seventh place.

After a disastrous start to the 2012/13 season (ten defeats in eleven games), Walter Kogler was dismissed from the club on October 10, 2012.

On October 17th, Roland Kirchler was introduced as the new coach after negotiations with the original favorite Michael Streiter broke up. FC Wacker won their first game under Kirchler 1-0 against SV Ried . It was the first victory for Innsbruck after seven defeats in a row, which was followed by further victories against SV Mattersburg and SC Wiener Neustadt (championship) and SK Sturm Graz ( ÖFB-Cup 2012/13 ). In a memorable and extremely dramatic season finale, in which four teams were involved in the relegation battle, the Innsbruck team won 3-2 in Wolfsberg on May 26, 2013 after a 2-0 deficit and thus sentenced SV Mattersburg to relegation, the after the 35th lap was still in 7th place. Josef Gunsch succeeded Kaspar Plattner as President in August 2013.

But the following autumn season was not very successful either. Roland Kirchler was sacked on December 16, 2013 after only 16 points were scored in 20 games. He was followed by an old friend, Michael Streiter . This could not prevent the relegation from the top Austrian league.

In July 2015, Alfred Hörtnagl was introduced as General Manager of FC Wacker Innsbruck and succeeds Florian Klausner as sporting director.

Schmidt had to vacate the coaching chair in May 2016 and interim coaches took over the team again, this time Andreas Schrott and Fuad Đulić . This was followed by Maurizio Jacobacci and Thomas Grumser to Karl Daxbacher , who took over the fighting team in January 2017. In the 2017/18 season the second team of the club also rose from the Regionalliga West to the first division,

Josef Gunsch retired as president and in April 2017 Gerhard Stocker, who had already led the association from 2003 to 2009, was re-elected president.

In the 2017/18 season, the club celebrated its renewed promotion to the Bundesliga.

The 2018/19 season did not go as desired for the club. In the entire season, eighth place after the seventh round was the best result this season. In the second half the club is in the lower quarter of the table, at the end of the regular season they were last. Therefore, the club pulled the rip cord and the club terminated the contract with Karl Daxbacher and the coach of the 2nd team, Thomas Gumser, who has held the coaching office from 2016 to 2017, took over in March 2019. But the qualification group was not on the road to success either being found. In the ten rounds of the group you could only celebrate four wins. Therefore, they went back to the 2nd Austrian level, which has been renamed the 2nd division in the meantime.

In the 2019/20 season, FC Wacker Innsbruck will play in the 2nd division. Since the budget had to be cut drastically, an attempt was made to raise additional money with the "Game against Time" project. The sold tickets are valid for a future European Cup match of FC Wacker Innsbruck.

On March 3, 2020, FC Wacker Innsbruck presented the first official core member of the club at a press conference. A long-established Hamburg merchant family with a global network and entrepreneurial focus in the USA, in the Arab region and in Europe is involved as a core member and thereby becomes a financially strong sponsor and partner of the traditional Tyrolean association.

With the entry of the financially strong sponsor and partner, gaming operations are secured for the next few years. The meaningful further development from a classic sports club to a modern sports company, as well as the return to the Bundesliga and the training of young players remains the focus. In addition, there is the area of eSports, which is to be promoted in addition to classic football from the 2020/21 season.

The former professional soccer player (including Hamburger SV and FC St. Pauli ) and vice-president of FC St. Pauli Jens Duve acts as a link between the club and the family office . On July 5, Joachim Jamnig was elected as the new president. Together with Jens Duve and Christoph Guski, Gerhard Stocker forms the new supervisory board.

Fans

The club is also supported by numerous fans in away games

The ultra- oriented fan scene of FC Wacker Innsbruck is organized as Tivoli Nord on the north stand of the Tivoli-Neu stadium . The most important fan group are the crazy heads who have existed since 1991 (with FC Tirol until 2002 ). Other fan clubs are Green Black Danube, Grün-Schwarze-Adler and brave our. Since 2010 there is another large group called Unterland. Another important group was the Nordpol Innsbruck fan club , which had existed since 2003 and was known for its political ambitions. In 2010, Nordpol Innsbruck disbanded due to a curve conflict. In March 2019, another big fan club, Fancmub I Furiosi , broke up . In that case, the reason was the loss of the shredded fence in an away game against LASK . From now on, the curve was apolitical but critical. The fan clubs in the north stand are on good terms with fans of Eintracht Frankfurt (Ultras Frankfurt, Droogs), Atalanta Bergamo (Brigate Nerazzurre) and Ternana Calcio (Freak Brothers Ternana).
