Matthäus Taferner (born January 30, 2001 in Klagenfurt ) is an Austrian football player . The midfielder is under contract with Wolfsberger AC . He is also a young Austrian national player.

Career

Taferner began his career at FC Wacker Tirol , which was later renamed FC Wacker Innsbruck . In 2015 he came to the Football Academy in Tyrol , where he attended the Bundes-Oberstufenrealgymnasium Innsbruck , branch of the competitive athletes.

On May 27, 2017 Taferner, who had already aroused the interest of SC Freiburg , made his debut for the amateurs of his regular club in the Regionalliga when he played against USC Eugendorf in the 60th minute instead of Sandro on matchday 30 of the 2016/17 season Gavrić was substituted on.

In September 2017 Taferner was appointed to the professional squad for the first time by coach Karl Daxbacher . He made his debut in the second division in the same month when he came on as a substitute for Daniele Gabriele in the 84th minute in the Tyrolean 4-0 away win against SC Austria Lustenau on 29 September 2017 . Through that commitment he became the first player in the second division to be born in the 21st century . With Wacker Innsbruck he rose to the Bundesliga at the end of the season .

He made his debut in the Bundesliga in April 2019 in a 3-1 defeat against SV Mattersburg . The following month he scored his first goal in the top Austrian division in a 4-0 win against Mattersburg. At the end of the season he had to relegate from the Bundesliga with Innsbruck after one season as bottom of the table.

He then moved to Germany for the 2019/20 season for the second division team Dynamo Dresden , where he received a contract that ran until June 2023. Before him, his former Innsbruck teammate Sascha Horvath had already returned to the Elbe. The midfielder only played four times in Dresden and was awarded to his old club Wacker Innsbruck in January 2020.

After nine appearances for the Tyroleans, he returned to Dresden in June 2020 due to his loan contract, which ended during the current season, after it had not been extended. For the 2020/21 season he returned to Austria again and switched to Bundesliga club Wolfsberger AC , with whom he received a contract that ran until June 2023.

National team

Team boss Rupert Marko appointed Taferner to the squad of the Austrian U15 national team in April 2016 for the Tournament of Nations . He was allowed to make his debut in the red, white and red dress on April 24, 2016 in the Wörthersee Stadium in Klagenfurt in a 3-3 draw against his colleagues from Mexico . Taferner played in the starting line-up and was replaced by Rapidler Lukas Fahrnberger during the break . Further missions followed on April 26 against Norway and on April 29 against Brazil . On April 9, 2017, he was in his Tyrolean homeland, in Jenbach , in the friendly international match against Turkey (1: 3) for the Austrian U16 national team.

In the summer of 2017 he was taken on by team boss Rupert Marko in the squad of the Austrian U17 national team for the international Toto Cup . On August 30, 2017, with his first international goal in the 79th minute of the game, he set the final point for a 4-0 win in the friendly against his colleagues from Finland in Sillian . Taferner played a total of five games for the U17 team.

In October 2018 he made his debut against Switzerland for the U18 team . In June 2019 he played for the U20 team for the first time against Switzerland . He made his U19 debut against Wales in October 2019 .
