Since 2008 he has been under contract with SC Austria Lustenau , where he played 89 league games and ten ÖFB Cup games. Leitgeb made his debut in the first division on July 11, 2008 in the away match against SV Grödig , which the Lustenauer lost 2-0 in the end. He scored his first goal on the second day of the 2008/09 season . However, the ball landed in his own goal. When he played in the ÖFB Cup game against FC Wels on August 14, 2008, he scored a regular goal in the 36th minute of the game. His club lost the game 5-4 on penalties.
In the winter break of 2011/12 he moved to the Grazer AK , but left it again after the failed promotion to the first division at the end of the season and joined SV Grödig . On June 12, 2014 Mario Leitgeb signed a three-year contract with FK Austria Wien. The parties have agreed not to disclose the terms of the transfer.
After he was supposed to sign a contract with SK Sturm Graz at the end of January 2016 , a month later he moved to Switzerland to FC St. Gallen , where he signed a contract that was valid until the end of the season.
In January 2017 he moved back to Austria for Bundesliga club Wolfsberger AC , where he received a contract that was valid until June 2018.
