The Austrian U-21 national soccer team is a selection team of Austrian soccer players . It is subordinate to the Austrian Football Association and represents it at the U-21 level , in friendly matches against the teams of other national associations, but also at the European championships of the continental association UEFA . Eligible are players who have not yet reached the age of 21 and who are Austrian citizens . In tournaments, the age at the first qualifying game is decisive.
history
With one exception (1980), Austria's U-21s have participated in all UEFA European championships. For the first time you could qualify for the finals in 2019 , where you were eliminated in the preliminary round.
In qualifying for the 2006 European Championship , Austria was drawn into Group 6 with Germany , England , Poland , Wales and Azerbaijan . There were three wins, two draws and five defeats, with a goal difference of 9:14. With only eleven points, the second place, which would have been enough for the play-offs, was unattainable. The Austrians lost both games against their neighbors and eventual group winners from Germany. There was a respectable success against the team from England, which was defeated on October 7, 2005, 2-1. It was Austria's only away win.
Since the next European Championship was to take place in 2007 after the EM 2006 , and not every two years as usual, this qualification was played out in a fast-track process. Starting with a preliminary round, over a short group stage with three teams and the play-off games. Austria needed to get into the group stage first. In group five, Italy and Iceland were drawn. There was only one game against each team, so that the teams each had one away and one home right. In the first game on August 16, 2006, the two underdogs Austria and Iceland took the points away from each other with a 0-0 draw. After Italy defeated Iceland 1-0 on matchday two, the last game against the Austrians had to decide. Italy prevailed again 1-0, so that the Austrians missed the qualification.
In qualifying for Euro 2009 , the Austrians were lucky and, with the exception of Italy, were able to avoid the big favorites in Group 7. With Belgium , Slovakia , Iceland and Cyprus , the team was faced with a difficult but manageable task. After only the first place qualified for the play-off round, this goal was the Austrians. With six wins and two draws, first place was clearly achieved. Belgium was clearly relegated to second place with nine points. All home games were won and points were lost only in the away games against Iceland and Slovakia. In no game did the team win more than one goal difference. It was the first qualification for the playoffs for the play-offs in the history of the Austrian U-21 team.
In the play-off games for a place in the play-off round of the EM 2009 on October 11th and 15th, 2008 Austria met Finland and was faced with a solvable task. In the first game in Pasching, two early goals by Christoph Saurer and Florian Klein initiated the 2-1 win after just 13 minutes - Përparim Hetemaj shortened for the Finns in the 63rd minute - whereby the Austrians missed many good opportunities. In the second leg, too, everything seemed to be going well. Marko Stanković scored the 1-0 lead in the 26th minute. This should last until the 81st minute before Jussi Vasara equalized. In stoppage time Vasara scored 2-1 for Finland with his second goal and forced Austria into extra time. After this did not bring a decision, there was a penalty shoot-out. In this Stanković and Madl failed at the Finnish keeper Tomi Maanoja , with which the Austrian team missed the first participation in a U-21 European Championship final.
In qualifying group 10 for the 2011 European Championship , the weakened Austrians started with a 1: 2 defeat in Belarus.
