Dietmar "Didi" Constantini (born May 30, 1955 in Innsbruck ) is a former Austrian soccer player and today's soccer coach . From March 4, 2009 to September 13, 2011, he coached the Austrian national team .

Career as a player

Constantini began his career with his parent club FC Wacker Innsbruck . He was twice champion with this club. After a guest performance in Linz, he completed his first and only foreign station in Greece. After returning to Austria, he played for a short time at various clubs in the first and second division before ending his career at the Wiener Sport-Club.

He played a total of 198 games in the Austrian Bundesliga and scored six goals.

Career as a coach

Constantini made his first experiences as a coach as an assistant coach in Austria and at Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia . He worked here with Walter Skocik and Hans Krankl . In 1991 he moved to the ÖFB , where he was in charge of the U-21 national team , while at the same time he was co-trainer of the senior national team boss Alfred Riedl . After his release, Constantini was the interim head of the Austrian national team for three months . When Ernst Happel was appointed as the new team boss in 1992, Constantini retired to the second member. The Happel / Constantini collaboration was often portrayed as a father / son relationship and Happel acted as a mentor to Constantini. After Happels death, Constantini looked after the national team again on an interim basis; However, after he was passed over in the new team boss appointment, the paths between him and the ÖFB parted.

He began a career as a Bundesliga coach. Clubs like LASK Linz , FC Admira Wacker Mödling and FC Tirol Innsbruck were his employers for the next four years. After that he looked after the 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the second German Bundesliga for 8 months . After this guest appearance, he began to organize soccer camps for children in Tyrol every summer. This financially lucrative business limited his professional coaching career a lot, as he had to organize his camps for the months of June to August and therefore could not be available to any club. He also wanted to save his family, who were settled in Tyrol, from moving and only accept short-term engagements.

Constantini went to the ÖFB again as an assistant coach and stayed there for two and a half years. He was again considered a candidate for the team boss post from 2002, but took himself out of the game because he accepted the offer to train FK Austria Vienna for the spring 2002 season. He started a brilliant comeback with the club from the bottom of the table and led the team into the UEFA Cup . After holding his summer youth camps, he accepted the post of sports director at Wüstenrot Salzburg in September 2002 . The amazing thing about this commitment was that he came to Salzburg when the team was bottom of the table. At the end of the season she was third. When Constantini left the club, the team soon found themselves back in last place, although the team and coach had remained almost the same. He spent the rest of 2003 again with his summer camps, and from September 2003 he was hired by FC Kärnten . Officially brought in as sports director, he spent a few games on the supervisor's bench and finally brought Peter Pacult into the club as a coach. A falling out with him also led to Constantini leaving the club. Then it became quiet. Although he had offers from the Grazer AK and various clubs from the First League and Switzerland, he turned them down.

During his time without football, he moderated the football program Volltreffer on ATV as an expert and continued to run his youth camps for children and young people.

It was not until March 2006 that he reappeared in the coaching business when he took over FC Superfund as a coach for three months. As usual with him, he did not sign a contract or negotiate a salary. After leading this club into the UEFA Cup, he was offered the opportunity to stay as sports director and work from Tyrol, but turned it down because he felt it was unfair not to be “on site”. Since the new Superfund coach unexpectedly resigned in October 2006, Constantini took over the club again as coach and stayed until the end of the 2007 season when the club sold its license to SK Austria Kärnten .

On March 19, 2008 he was introduced as an interim trainer for Austria Wien. He looked after the team until the end of the season.

Austrian national coach

On March 4, 2009 Constantini was appointed the new Austrian team manager . He succeeded the Czech Karel Brückner , who had to leave the ÖFB team after seven months of service and four competition games. Constantini, who had already led the national team twice on an interim basis, had repeatedly been associated with this position in previous years. In the remaining six qualifying games for the 2010 World Cup , the ÖFB team under Constantini's leadership collected ten points. However, as third placed in qualifying group 7 and seven points behind second-placed France , the World Cup finals were clearly missed.

The ÖFB's contract with Constantini was extended in September 2009 to the 2012 European Championship.

Constantini had been considered the favorite of broad sections of the Austrian football audience and the tabloids. In the course of his service, however, he received more and more criticism from the media public. Controversies with internationally experienced team players such as Martin Stranzl , Alexander Manninger and György Garics , which all ended with the elimination or resignation of the respective players from the national team, raised doubts about Constantini's management style. In the autumn of 2009, Constantini met with a lack of understanding with his various reasons why he did not want to call up former team captain Andreas Ivanschitz , who played for his club 1. FSV Mainz 05 , into the ÖFB team.

In the first year of his service, Constantini called many young Austrian players into the national team. Some players, such as Aleksandar Dragović , Yasin Pehlivan , Julian Baumgartlinger or Jakob Jantscher, established themselves permanently - as with their clubs - while others ( Christopher Drazan , Christopher Trimmel ) only played a role for a short time. This approach was also criticized.

The Austrian national team started qualifying for the 2012 European Championship with seven points from the first three games . But the performance of the team and the line-up of the team boss in the 2-0 win against Kazakhstan on September 7, 2010 triggered criticism of Constantini. After a 4: 4 in Belgium a month later, his position initially seemed secured until further notice. In the further course, however, the European Championship qualification was missed, so that Constantini's contract, which ran until the end of 2011, was not extended. On September 13, 2011 Constantini resigned as national coach with immediate effect.
