György "Gyuri" Garics [ ɟørɟ gɒriʧ ] (* 8. March 1984 in Szombathely , Hungary ) is a former Austrian football - national team . Garics can play in both right defense and right midfield . In July 2017, Garics retired as a professional footballer, but will continue to play in amateur football.

Career

Born in Hungary, Garics moved from Szombathely to Vienna at the age of 14 to join the Rapid generation. At the same time, he was enrolled in the Vienna cooperation school ORG Maroltingergasse, where he passed the Matura with "excellent success". At the age of 17 Garics switched from the offspring to the rapid amateurs. Just one day after his naturalization , he played in the Austrian U-21 national team.

Garics made his debut for SK Rapid Wien in September 2002 at the age of 18 under coach Josef Hickersberger . In 2005 he won the Austrian championship with Rapid, in the summer of 2006 a change was initially negotiated with FC Turin , but it did not materialize in the end. On August 29, 2006, he moved to SSC Napoli in the Italian Serie B for a transfer fee of 700,000  euros . Garics fought for a regular place in Naples and rose to the Italian Serie A after the 2006/07 season . In the 2007/08 season he scored his first goal in a 3-1 win over AC Milan .

On July 1, 2008 Garics moved to league rivals Atalanta Bergamo . Half of the transfer rights remained with SSC Napoli. In the summer of 2009, the remaining transfer rights were bought by Atalanta and Garics received a three-year contract.

On August 10, 2010 Garics moved to Bologna FC for around three million euros , where he signed a four-year contract.

Garics was operated on on February 8, 2011 due to a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament that was torn during a training game and meniscus damage. At the beginning of October 2011 he finally got back into team training and made his comeback in the starting line-up on October 26, 2011 in a 1-0 win against Chievo Verona .

For the 2015/16 season Garics moved to the German Bundesliga club SV Darmstadt 98 . He signed a contract running until June 30, 2017. In August 2016, he terminated his contract in Darmstadt.

After being without a club for a year, Garics announced his departure from professional football in July 2017. He returned to Italy and was signed by Serie D club Imolese Calcio in 1919 .

National team

Garics was the team captain of the Austrian U-21 national team .

In 2006 Garics was called up to the national team by his former club coach and then ÖFB team boss Josef Hickersberger . On October 6, 2006, he made his international debut as a substitute in the international match against Liechtenstein and also scored a goal in the 2-1 win. Due to his performance in the Italian league, he was called up on May 28, 2008 in the Austrian squad for the European Championship 2008 , in which he completed the games against Poland and Germany .

Under the Austrian team boss Dietmar Constantini Garics was not nominated for an international match for a long time, which led to a public dispute between the two. At the beginning of November 2010, Garics caused a sensation with an interview in the magazine Sportwoche . In this he threw Constantini a. a. suggested having "no balls and no backbone" and criticized his skills as a coach. He also stated that he would no longer appear for the national team under Constantini. In February 2012 he was nominated back into the squad by the new team boss Marcel Koller and was used in the 3-1 victory over Finland. On March 22, 2013, he scored the last goal in a 6-0 win over the Faroe Islands.

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in Austria's squad. He was one of two field players, together with Markus Suttner , who were not used in the tournament.
