On the qualification for UEFA EURO 1992 in Sweden to 33 national teams, which were divided into seven groups involved. The group winners automatically qualified for the final round. The Swedish national football team was automatically qualified to host and completed the field of eight teams. The qualifying matches were held in 1990 and 1991.
The last time the two-point rule applied , two points were awarded for a win, one point for a draw, and no points for a defeat. And the goal difference also had priority over the direct comparison for the last time . San Marino and the Faroe Islands took part in a qualification for the European Football Championship for the first time.
The dissolution of the Eastern Bloc, German reunification, the break-up of Yugoslavia and the unrest in Albania left their mark during and after qualifying for the European Championship. The match between Albania and Spain in Group 1 could not be played due to unrest. Since it was no longer relevant, the game was omitted. The USSR was able to prevail in Group 3, but then entered as the CIS . Yugoslavia was group winners in Group 4, but after the outbreak of the Yugoslav Wars, the team was excluded for a short time. Instead, the future European champions Denmark took part in the finals of the European Championship. In group 5, the GDR was taken out of the competition and only played the game against Belgium that was already scheduled as a friendly .
The USSR qualified first in the group. Due to the political changes in the country and the dissolution of the USSR, the participation in the European championship took place under the name Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
Yugoslavia would actually have qualified as group winners for the European Championship. After the outbreak of the Yugoslav wars , however, the team was excluded at short notice. Instead, Denmark took part in the finals as second in the table.
The German Democratic Republic was drawn into group 5 when the qualification groups were drawn. In view of the reunification of the two German states on October 3, 1990, negotiated in the summer , the GDR selection no longer took part. Only on the already set date on September 12, 1990 in Brussels was played against Belgium, but as a friendly game , which was won 2-0 by goals from Matthias Sammer . The German-German derby planned for November no longer took place.
