Hugo Meisl
Hugo Meisl (born November 16, 1881 in Maleschau (now Malešov ), Austria-Hungary , † February 17, 1937 in Vienna ) was one of the most outstanding personalities in Austrian football history . After finishing his playing career, he worked successfully as a coach , official, international referee , ÖFB general secretary and FIFA delegate. From 1913 to 1914 and from 1919 until his death he was in charge of the Austrian national team.
resume
Hugo Meisl was born as the son of the Jewish businessman Ludwig Meisl and his wife Karoline, b. Mautner, born in Bohemia. At the age of twelve he moved to Vienna and attended a business school there. He began to be increasingly interested in the emerging football sport and in 1895 joined the Vienna Cricket and Football Club . Because of his professional training, which he completed in Trieste and Paris, among others, he was only able to pursue his passion for football very irregularly. After his permanent employment as a bank clerk in 1905, Meisl soon developed into one of the leading referees of the ÖFV and whistled a total of 16 international games, including the 1912 Olympic Games . Due to his multilingualism, Hugo Meisl spoke German, Czech, Italian, French and English perfectly, and fluent other languages such as Swedish, Spanish and Dutch, he became an indispensable representative of the ÖFV at FIFA from 1907 .
Hugo Meisl began his coaching career in 1912 with the Wiener Amateur-SV , but soon looked after the Austrian national soccer team from 1913 until his death in 1937, interrupted only by his military service during the First World War on the Isonzo front . During this period, the miracle team is the most successful team in the history of the national team. He also campaigned strongly for the introduction of professionalism , so that in 1924 Austria became the first continental European country with its own professional league. Hugo Meisl was also of great importance for European football history. He was instrumental in creating the Mitropa Cup , the forerunner of the Champions League , as well as the creation of the European Cup , which was the forerunner of the European Championship . Hugo Meisl, who had also held the position of ÖFB General Secretary since 1926, died of a heart attack at the age of 55 while working.
He was buried in a grave of honor at the Vienna Central Cemetery , Gate 5, Group 3, Row 4, No. 11.
The 17th Braunauer Zeitgeschichte-Tage dealt with Meisl on June 28th, 2008 under the title Fascination Football .
His former study in the Karl-Marx-Hof in Vienna was reconstructed in the association museum of the FK Austria and can be visited there together with numerous objects.
Honors
For his achievements, Hugo Meisl was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Austrian Order of Merit and the Silver Medal for Services to the Republic of Austria , among others , Italy honored him with the title of Knight of the Crown of Italy. In 1989 the Hugo-Meisl-Weg in Vienna- Favoriten was named after him.
