Gustav Thaler (born November 21, 1909 ; † unknown) was an Austrian football player and football coach who was part of the national team during the time of the wonder team .

Club career

Thaler made his debut in the top division in 1929 when he was used as the left winger at Nicholson FC. In the following two seasons he established himself with the favorites and became a regular player. In 1932 he joined the reigning champions SK Admira Vienna , where he stayed only a few months and moved to the Vienna AC for the second half of the season. He was also able to secure a permanent place in the runner row of the Prater team, where he played alongside Georg Braun and Rudolf Kubesch .

When the WAC got into serious economic difficulties in the mid-1930s, Thaler returned to his parent club, which had since changed its name and was taking on as FC Wien . There he was now used in defense, where he first formed the defensive with Karl Schneider and then with Josef Hassmann . The Favoritner belonged to the middle of the league and took seventh place in 1937/38, which would actually have been enough to keep the league, but the club had to relegate due to the reorganization of the top division after the annexation of Austria and the associated inclusion of provincial teams. Thaler switched to one of the new first division clubs, namely RB Wacker Wiener Neustadt , which he left after half a season.

Thaler then joined First Vienna FC , where he initially played alongside Willibald Schmaus , but soon had no regular seat due to competition from national players such as Otto Kaller and later Karl Bortoli . Nevertheless, during the war years he was part of the squad of the Vienna team, which was victorious in the championship. As a war guest player, Thaler worked for Wilhelmshaven 05 for a long time .

National team

In June 1931 there was a representative game against the Swiss national football team , in which Thaler came on for the injured Roman Schramseis . The game ended 2-0 and was declared an official international match by the ÖFB in the 1970s. Thaler appears in today's statistics as a national player of the wonder team era. In the late 1930s it was used once in the Ostmark selection and several times in the Vienna city team.

Coaching career

In the 1950s, Thaler worked as a trainer at SC Olympia 33 and was able to achieve five championship titles with the Penzingers in just six years. He led the club from the sixth to the top division, where the league was initially managed. However, Thaler was replaced as a coach and from 1960 looked after the second division club FC Stadlau for four years .
