The Viennese were considered one of Austria's most outstanding defenders in his time. He was best known for his speed and his excellent positional play. The calm and prudent Viennese was also a feared free-kick and penalty kick specialist .

Blum also celebrated great success as a player with Vienna. In 1929 and 1930 he became Austrian Cup winner with his club , Austrian champion and Mitropapokalieger in 1931, and in 1933 (with a few appearances in 1932) shortly before the end of his active career and the change as a coach to Austria Wien again Austrian champion .

Blum celebrated his debut in the Austrian national team on November 7, 1920 in a 2-1 win over Hungary in Budapest . He was soon called " Wödmasta " ( world champion ) by his teammates at Vienna and in the team because of his talents . A title that later came to Ernst Happel after the Second World War . From 1920 to 1932 he completed a total of 51 missions in the national team and was its undisputed captain for twelve years. At the first game of the wonder team on May 16, 1931 against Scotland , Josef Blum was already 33 years old and was regarded as a well-respected boss in the Austrian team. His last game in the national team was played by Josef Blum, who was also called up to the Vienna team 20 times, on April 24, 1932 in Vienna. The Austrian team celebrated an 8-2 triumph over Hungary.

After his active career as a football player , he coached the Vienna Austria , Racing Strasbourg , First Vienna FC , the Wiener Sport-Club and SV Kapfenberg . With Wiener Austria he celebrated his greatest successes as a coach in 1933, right in his first year, with victory in the Vienna Cup and the Mitropa cup.

In mid-1935 he succeeded Fritz Kerr at the French runner-up in Racing Strasbourg . With Strasbourg he moved into the cup final in 1936/37 , but it was lost 2-1 to FC Sochaux . In 1938, Karl "Charles" Rumbold , who was in central defense with Blum between 1918 and 1920, was his successor in the Strasbourg coaching bench. It was homesickness, but also the ongoing devaluation of the French franc, that moved Blum to give up his position in Strasbourg.

In 1956 Josef Blum died of a stroke at the age of 58 .
