Itea ( Greek Ιτέα ( f. Sg. )) Is a small Greek town on the Gulf of Corinth in the region of Central Greece . Until 2010 it formed an independent parish, which became part of the Delfi parish on January 1, 2011 , where it has since formed a parish.

location

Itea is located on the north coast of the Gulf of Corinth south of the national road 48 ( European route 65 ), which connects Itea with Andirrio and the Rio-Andirrio bridge . Itea is about 15 km southwest of Delphi , about 200 km west of Athens and 10 km north of Galaxidi .

To the east lies Kirra , in historical times the port of Delphi , today a village in the municipality of Itea and has grown together with Itea.

Itea extends in the fertile coastal plain, which stretches north to the nearby Amfissa and is bordered by rocky mountains in the east and west. Here you will find Greece's largest contiguous olive grove with around 500,000 olive trees.

history

Itea itself was founded in 1830. Due to its convenient location - the port of Itea served as access to the sea for all of central Greece - it soon developed into a trade and transport hub.

The Kirra, which belongs to Itea today, was already settled 3000 years before Christ. Kirra served as the port of the holy city of Delphi and was the only gateway to Delphi, a major city. Kirra was fortified with strong walls and, according to Pausanias, adorned with temples and statues. Kirra was believed to have been destroyed by the 740 AD earthquake.

On September 17, 1827, Frank Abney Hastings , a Philhellene and captain of the Greek fleet, destroyed an Ottoman flotilla of nine ships in the Bay of Itea as the commander of the first steam-powered warship .

Itea has a Riviera charm that is rare in Greece and a well-tended promenade. On the lake side of the promenade, one restaurant is lined up after the next. When the view is clear, the mountains of the Peloponnese can be seen on the opposite side of the Gulf of Corinth .

In 2013, Itea entered into a partnership with the Ukrainian city of Bila Tserkva .

Administrative division

As part of the municipal reform in 1997 , the new municipality Itea was formed through the incorporation of two rural municipalities, with the municipal administration in the small town of Itea. In the course of the administrative reform in 2010, this municipality was merged with seven others to form the municipality of Delfi and has since had the status of a municipal district. This is divided into the municipality of Itea and two local communities.
