Andirrio ( modern Greek Αντίρριο ( n. Sg. ), Ancient Greek / Katharevousa Ἀντίῤῥιον Antirrhion , Latin Antirrhium ) is a western Greek port city on the Gulf of Corinth . The name means "across from Rhion / Rio ". Since the administrative reform in 2010 , it has belonged to the municipality of Nafpaktia as a municipality ( Δημοτική Ενότητα Αντιρρίου Dimotiki Enotita Andirriou ) . The village is located on a headland that marks the border between the Gulf of Patras in the west and the Gulf of Corinth in the east. Since 2004 connects Rio-Antirrio bridge ( Greek Γέφυρα Ρίου-Αντιρρίου Gefyra Riou-Andirriou or Γέφυρα Χαρίλαος Τρικούπης GEFYRA Charilaos Trikoupis "Charilaos Trikoupis Bridge"), the western mainland Greece with the Peloponnese . Andirrio is now on the 5 / E55 motorway with a connection to the GR-48 / E65 ( Amfissa  - Andirrio). Andirrio is located about 10 km east-northeast of Patras , about 209 km west of Athens and northwest of Egio , west-southwest of Amfissa, southwest of Nafpaktos , east of Mesolongi and southeast of Agrinio .

geography

Port of Andirrio (1981)

There is a primary school, a high school, a church, a post office and a beach on site. The development stretches along the coast and the main road. The surrounding area consists mainly of agricultural land and forest in the northwest. Since 1960 there has been a ferry connection between the Peloponnese and the mainland. Since the opening of the Rio-Andirrio Bridge, this service has rarely been used, especially by vehicles that are not permitted on the bridge. The pyramid-shaped Paliovouna extends northwest of the city . Its summit rises to 1038 m.

history

In ancient times the city of Molikrion was called Rhion ( Μολύκριον Ρίον ) after that of the city of Molukria ( Μολύκρεια / Μολυκρία ). The ruins of the city of Makyneia are also nearby. Under Turkish rule, the place was called "Little Dardanelles" ( Μικρά Δαρδανέλια Mikrá Dardanélia ) because of the strait .

The city was of strategic importance due to its location. Therefore there is still a lighthouse (from 1880) with a height of 9.5 m and the fortress . This was built by Bayezid II after the destruction of Nafpaktos (August 29, 1499 ) . In 1532 it was razed by Andrea Doria , the leader of the united Christian troops. In 1669 it was renewed by Francesco Morosini , but after the Peace of Karlowitz it was destroyed again and rebuilt by the Turks.
