  • The Aftokinitodromos 5 / Αυτοκινητόδρομος 5 ( Greek for 'motorway 5'), also called Ionia Odos / Ιόνια Οδός (Greek for "Ionian road"), is a Greek motorway and connects Ioannina in northwest Greece with the south of the Peloponnese . It connects the west of mainland Greece to the existing motorway network in Greece and is the second north-south motorway connection in Greece after Aftokinitodromos 1 . Sections are part of the European route 55 , the European route 853 and the European route 951 . The southern part from Patras is also known as Olympia Odos .

    course

Motorway 5 is largely based on the course of national road 5 (EO 5) from Ioannina to Rio . When expanding to the north (Greek- Albanian border at Ktismata ), the route to Kalpaki is the national road 20 (EO 20) and then the national road 22 (EO 22).

Following the publication of the numbering system for the Greek motorways by the General Secretariat of the Ministry of the Environment, Spatial Planning and Public Buildings in early 2008, the A5 includes the route from Rio via Patras, Pyrgos, Kyparissia to Tsakona in the south in addition to the original route from Kakavia via Ioannina to Rio of the Peloponnese. This route was previously known as Autobahn 9 (A9).

The highway 5 continues from Patras along the west coast of the Peloponnese to the south. It is largely based on the course of the national road 9 (EO 9) to Kalo Nero north of the river Peristeri and the city of Kyparissia , but is not identical to its course. After Kalo Nero, the route of the Autobahn 5 swings east into the interior of the Peloponnese and leads into the northern part of the plain of Messinia . It follows the course of the national road 9a to Tsakona to the national road 7 (EO 7) or the future motorway 7 .

    Construction and expansion

    Ionia Odos shortly after Agrinio

On the Greek mainland, the motorway between Ioannina and the Charilaos-Trikoupis bridge near Rio as a connection to the Peloponnese peninsula has already been completed and covers a length of 196 km. Most of the section between Arta and Ioannina Airport, including the motorway junction with the A2 , was opened to traffic on February 22, 2017. The expansion of the section north of Ioannina to Ktismata on the Greek- Albanian border (approx. 70 km) is not currently seen as an urgent requirement, so that there are currently only plans for this section. Instead, the existing national roads 20 and 22 will first be gradually expanded. With the bypassing Ioannina and the section between the Albanian border and Kalpaki , important sections of this section of the route have already been completed. The long-term goal, however, remains the extension of the A5 motorway to the Albanian-Greek border.

Ovria exit with outdated signs as the A9 motorway

The Patras bypass has also been completed in the Peloponnese. This contains several bridges and tunnels, as it bypasses Patras in a wide arc from east to southwest on the slopes of the Panachaiko massif. The further section from Patras (end of the motorway bypass in the southwest of the city) to Pyrgos is partly under construction, while the section from Pyrgos to Kyparissia and Tsakona is only planned to be finished. The section in the Peloponnese was originally known as the A9 motorway until a decree by the Greek government changed the numbering.

The entire motorway will be subject to toll after completion. Currently this is only the Charilaos Trikoupis Bridge.

    Networking

The Ioannina airport and Araxos airport are directly connected to the motorway. After completion of the new port of Patras, which is currently under construction, it will also have a direct feeder to the Autobahn 5. This will keep the majority of EU goods traffic out of the city of Patras and instead will be routed via the A5.

    particularities

Crossing the Gulf of Patras with the 2,883 m long Charilaos-Trikoupis Bridge was a technical challenge . This bridge, together with the Arta and Patras bypasses, was the first completed section of the A5.

    Attractions

The ancient Dodoni can be reached via the highway 5 , via Amfilochia the ancient Actium and the island of Lefkada and via Preveza and the national road 21 (EO21) Nikopolis . In the west of the Peloponnese, ancient Olympia and the Temple of Apollo at Bassae can also be reached via the A5.
