The Ethniki Odos 51 / Εθνική Οδός 51 ( Greek for 'national road 51') is an important road connection in northeast Greece in the region of Western Thrace or in the Evros regional district . It connects Alexandroupoli on the Aegean coast in the south with Ormenio in the north on the Bulgarian border. It leads over long stretches along the course of the river Evros (Mariza) on its western side near the Turkish border (middle of the river). The entire stretch of national road 51 is congruent with European route 85 . In the course of the construction of the Autobahn 2 (A2, Egnatia Odos) , the national road 51 was developed as a so-called transverse axis of the freeway running in east-west direction. After expansion, it will each include a lane with a hard shoulder without separate lanes.

In the publication of the numbering and route definition of the Greek motorways by the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Environment, Regional Planning and Public Buildings in January 2008, national road 51 is to be replaced by the planned motorway 21 (A21) .
