future
According to current plans, the completion of the motorway to the Greek border should take place by 2023; 80% of the construction costs will be borne by structural programs of the European Union. Tenders are also running for the construction of a total of 68 km of the Hemus motorway, financing through loans is being considered, construction was to start in 2019, the route is expected to open in 2022. Construction of the first 16 kilometers of the motorway between the Serbian border and Sofia began in 2020, and the entire route is scheduled to open in 2021. In contrast, further construction of the motorway along the Black Sea coast is not expected in the medium term due to a lack of funding. The planned motorway route amounts to a total of around 1300 kilometers. The total costs are estimated at 3.3 billion euros.
