Network of autovías and autopistas

There are two terms for “ motorway ” in Spain : Autovía and Autopista . The distinction has its origins in the 1980s when the Spanish road network was to be quickly modernized with EU funding. Important national roads were expanded to four lanes and - to distinguish them from the few existing autopistas - called autovías . As early as the mid-1990s, however, there was a move towards building car vias parallel to the existing national roads.

Since the road network was renumbered in 2003, the main difference is that autopistas are privately built and privately operated highways, while autovias are built and maintained by a public operator.

In some metropolitan areas there are parallel autopistas and autovías with the same number within a few kilometers - for example the A-7 and the AP-7 along the Costa del Sol or the A-68 and the AP-68 in Saragossa. Here the autovías have a comparatively high density of exits, which means that they fulfill a feeder function, while there are only a few exits at the autopistas, so that they are primarily used for through traffic.

Autopistas are usually better developed: they have larger curve radii, more elaborately designed entrances and exits and less gradients. In any case, they are developed without intersections, while autovías sometimes end in traffic light intersections (now very rare). In addition, autovías are always free of charge, while autopistas are mostly subject to tolls . The numbering of autovías, if they are maintained by the state, starts with A and that of autopistas with AP , although there are exceptions to this rule. There are also a large number of provincial or regional autovías, which can then have other names. The list does not differentiate between the two terms. In general, the number of autovías clearly predominates.

To make it even more complicated: Usually, AP (Autopista) and A (Autovía) sections alternate. For example, the A-1 Madrid-San Sebastián-Madrid is mostly toll-free, but in parts it is also subject to tolls as the AP-1.

But there are also sections where A and AP run parallel, for example AP-2 and A-2 between Lleida and Barcelona .

Regional highways

In addition, some of the individual regions ( autonomous communities ) still maintain expressways. This also includes most of the ring roads in the metropolitan area. These roads, some of which are similar to autobahns, are marked with the abbreviations of the respective region / autonomous community or their capital. Examples of these regional highways:

These arterial roads were built around Madrid parallel to the existing A-1 to A-5 motorways to relieve them during rush hour and on days with high traffic.
