The C-31 (also known as the Eix Costaner ) is a Catalan motorway. It was created by merging several existing roads, autopistas and autovias after the "Primary Highway" was downgraded by the Catalan government. With this new regulation, the first digit (C- 3 1) stands for the fact that the motorway runs southeast - northeast (parallel to the Mediterranean Sea ). The second number (C-3 1 ) means that it is closest to the Mediterranean.
The motorway is still sketchy because the missing sections are either not finished or because they have not yet been renamed by the Spanish government.
Southern part (El Vendrell-South Barcelona)
The first section replaces the former C-246, also known as "Costes del Garraf". It starts at the junction of the N-340 in El Vendrell and runs parallel to the Mediterranean coast , runs through several coastal towns and ends in Castelldefels .
The connection between Barcelona ’s Gran Via and Plaça d'Espanya , formerly the C-246 Autovia, also known as Autovia de Castelldefels , ends at Barcelona-El Prat Airport .
Northern part
The northern part was formerly part of the AP-19 , the first Autopista Spain (1969). It starts at Plaça de les Glòries Catalanes in Barcelona and runs parallel to the Badalona coast and ends at the intersection with the B-20 and the C-32 in Montgat .
Costa Brava's section (Santa Cristina d'Aro-Figueres)
The section replaces the former C-253 and C-252 . It starts at the end of the C-65 in Santa Cristina d'Aro and runs parallel to the Costa Brava coast . This is followed by the towns of Castell-Platja d'Aro , Palamós , Palafrugell , up to this point it has been run as an Autovia. From here on it takes on the character of a federal road. It is followed by Pals , Torroella de Montgrí and Verges. There are many intersections and roundabouts on this section. From Verges the route is again built without intersections, but only designed for 100 km / h with 2 lanes and continues via Viladamat before it ends in Figueres .
